Chapter Six: ATrap
(Anna’s POV)
I sat on the couch, trying to keep my breathing steady as Levi spoke. His voice was warm, gentle, filled with words that should have made my heart flutter.
“I love you, Anna,” he said, his dark eyes locked onto mine. “From the moment I met you, I knew you were the one.”
I forced a small smile, pretending to be moved by his words. But inside, my heart was pounding.
Did he really not remember me?
Could it be possible that he had forgotten who I was?
No. That didn’t make sense.
He had called me Teevee that night. That was a name only people from my past knew. A name I hadn’t heard in almost twenty years.
If he didn’t remember me, he wouldn’t have said it.
Which meant… Levi knew exactly who I was.
Then why was he pretending?
Why was he acting like a man deeply in love with me when he had to know we were step-siblings?
I swallowed hard, my thoughts racing.
Could it be a mistake? Maybe he wanted to see how much I remembered before revealing the truth? Or… was this something more?
Something planned?
I needed to find out.
So I smiled, masking my confusion. “Levi… your parents. How are they?”
Levi’s expression remained calm. “They aren’t in the country now,” he said smoothly. “But once they’re back, I’ll introduce them to you.”
I froze for a second.
Introduce them?
I knew his parents. His mother was the woman who had made my life miserable. His mother was the one who had abandoned me at school, leaving me to fend for myself.
Introduce them? As what?
As his fiancée?
Or as the girl they had thrown away years ago?
My mind felt like it was spinning, but I forced my expression to stay neutral. I couldn’t let Levi see my shock.
So I smiled again. A soft, polite smile. “That would be nice,” I lied.
Levi reached for my hand, his fingers warm against my skin. “Anna, I want to build a future with you. I want us to be happy.”
Happy?
How could I be happy when I didn’t even know why I was here?
Why he was doing this?
But I nodded, playing along. “I want that too.”
Just then, his phone rang.
Levi glanced at the screen and casually pulled it out of his pocket.
I wasn’t trying to look, but my eyes caught the name on the screen.
Father.
I felt my stomach drop.
No. It couldn’t be…
Before I could stop myself, my gaze flickered to the number beneath the name.
It was familiar. Too familiar.
The same number my father used twenty years ago.
The same number I had dialed over and over as a child, hoping he would answer. Hoping he would come back for me.
My breath hitched, my body freezing in place.
Was this really my father? The man who had left me?
Why was he calling Levi?
I barely noticed when Levi stood up and walked a few steps away, answering the call.
“Hello, Father,” he said, his voice low.
Father.
My father.
I gripped the couch, my heart slamming against my ribs.
This wasn’t a coincidence.
Levi had known exactly who I was all along.
And now, I needed to know why.
