Kade's Dream

“Well, you two go rest, and I'll take the first watch! Last night, you two took watches, but I didn't." Bayli stood up and stated, "It's my turn to protect you guys." Kade gave a gentle smile. Hunta sat down and nodded, falling asleep almost instantly.

“I understand you don't feel like a man when I look after you. But, bro, she likes you just the way you are, flaws and all,” Kade remarked, raising her eyes to Bayli. She knew he liked Hunta more than just as a friend, but just now all she needed was a friend. She lost her brother Ben, just as the twins had lost their mother. He was defending her, causing them to flee and abandon him. He was only a year older than them and was acting like an adult despite the fact that he was only 13 years old. Like the father they never had.   

“I understand. I just feel like it's my responsibility to keep you safe! You're always looking out for me. I'm also the oldest!”

“By a minute!” exclaims Kade.

“I'm still older!”

They sat in comfortable stillness until Kade drifted off, exclaiming, "Whatever!" And the dreams began all over again.

Her nose was filled with the aroma of chocolate as she ran through a field. When she looked down, she saw she was sprinting through a field of long green grass up to her waist, the chocolate? She couldn't figure out where it was coming from. She looked back to stare, anxiety coursing through her veins for no apparent reason. She was unable to see anything. She could only see black. Bayli was nowhere to be found as she searched about.

“Bayli!? Hunta!?” She screamed desperately, despite the fact that every fibre of her being warned her not to. A massive roar erupted from behind her, and she bolted. She looked back as she walked across the meadows and into the woods, out of breath. The darkness drew nearer and nearer. She coughed out a golden substance as she grasped her knees.

“What the-” says Kade examining her hands. Someone grabbed her arm and dragged her deeper into the trees, cutting her short. She had a feeling it was someone who wanted to assist her. They drew her deeper and deeper into the trees. Until they arrived to the tree canopy where she had fallen asleep. A young man stood nearby, staring at her. He had a mop of brown curls and chocolate brown skin. His eyes were a light blue, like a gentle ocean wave crashing on the shore.

“Who are you” Weary of the new guy, Kade inquired. He turned around to see the dark mass on the horizon.

“Blake, but that's beyond the point right now! I've been running from that for a long time in my dreams,” he said, pointing to the dark mass. " I'm not sure how long I've been sleeping. After the last guy, you're the first person to come in here.”

“What happened to the last guy?”  She took a deep breath, knowing something wasn't right. He locked his gaze on Kade, and the two of them sat there, transfixed, for a half second.

“In the darkness, he vanished. And I can't seem to wake up,” he said as he drew his gaze away.

“How are we going to get out of here!? I have to return!” Kade remarked, her voice trembling with fear. He shook his head in frustration. She lowered her eyes tears threatening, what would Bayli do? What if she never woke up?

“Can you tell me your name?” Blake inquired, biting his lower lip.

“My name is Kade. I'm aware that it's a boy's name. My parents thought I was a male and named me before I was born!” Before he could attack her like everyone else, Kade protected herself.

“No, no, no. I like it, since it is unique."  Blake smiled and added, "Unlike my name. Blake."

“No, it's a cool name,” she says. Kade defended him, saying, "I like it." She froze, and she caused unpleasant situations by saying things without thinking, as she did now. She slowly raised her eyes from the green grass. Blake's form was dissolving, and he was mouthing something, but he was quickly vanished. She frowned and mumbled to herself, "I should've told you my real name."
