Lena's POV
The formal engagement announcement had been prepared. What remained was standing in front of it.
Sienna dressed me again. She appeared at my door in the early morning with the dresses and the practiced hands and the expression of someone doing something that was costing her more than she wanted to show. She chose the deep green again but with different jewelry this time, simpler, nothing that performed wealth we did not share because she understood, I thought, that performing wealth I did not have would read as false in a room full of people who could afford the real thing.
She worked in near silence. I let her. It was not the silence of animosity. It was the silence of two people who have reached a specific agreement about the terms of a moment and are honoring it.
