chapter 7

Rain hammered the tower windows like angry fists. The storm had come fast, turning the city streets into rivers of light and shadow. Zara stood on the fortified sublevel with Roman, watching the security screens. The rival wolves had fled into the night, but no one believed they were gone for good. Garrick limped over, a deep cut on his arm already closing. He carried two steaming mugs. He handed one to Zara and one to Roman. Hot coffee, he said. We have a few minutes before the next wave. Zara wrapped her hands around the mug. The warmth felt good after the cold fight. Thank you, Garrick. The old wolf bowed his head. It is my honor, Luna. Roman drank his coffee in one long swallow. He looked at the screens again. Police cars blocked every street around the tower now. News helicopters hovered high above, their lights cutting through the rain. The human world saw too much tonight, Roman said quietly. Guns. Wolves. Blood in the lobby. Tomorrow the news will call it a gang war or terrorists. But some will guess the truth. Zara felt worry rise in the pack bond. Many wolves had human jobs, human friends, human families. Secrets had kept them safe for years. What do we do? she asked. Roman's eyes turned hard. We get stronger. Faster. The silver Luna is awake now. Word is already spreading beyond the city. Lone wolves are coming. Small packs want to join us. Even some from rival packs want to switch sides. Garrick nodded. I felt three new minds touch the edges of our bond during the fight. They ran from Cassian’s wolves to find you, Luna. They wait outside in the rain, asking permission to enter. Zara looked at Roman. Can we trust them? We will test them, he said. But we need numbers. Cassian will come again, and next time he will bring every pack he can control. Roman gave orders through the mind-link. A team of guards went to the hidden side door. Minutes later, they brought in three wet, tired wolves — two men and one woman, all young. They knelt in front of Roman and Zara without being told. The woman spoke first. Her voice shook. My name is Lena. We heard the silver howl. We felt the new bond. Cassian treats his pack like slaves. We want to be free. We want to follow the true Luna. Zara stepped closer. She looked into their eyes and felt the pack bond reach out. No lies. Only hope and fear. She touched Lena's wet hair gently. You are welcome here. You are safe now. The three wolves lowered their heads to the floor, relief pouring through the bond. The whole pack felt warmer, stronger. Roman smiled a little. Good. We grow. But the alarms screamed again. New red dots appeared on the screens — cars pulling up fast. Black vans. Men in dark uniforms jumped out, carrying big guns. Not wolves, Garrick said, eyes narrow. Humans. Special ones. Roman's face went cold. Hunters. Zara felt the word like ice in her blood. Hunters? Humans who know about us, Roman explained fast. They hate all wolves. They have silver weapons. Fire that burns forever. They work in secret, but tonight the fighting was too big to hide. On the screens, the hunters moved like soldiers. They shot tranquilizer darts at police to clear the way. Then they entered the lobby. They want me, Zara said. Because of the silver blood stories. Roman pulled her close. They will not touch you. He turned to the pack. Everyone to battle stations. Protect the young and wounded deeper below. Fighters with me and the Luna. Wolves moved at once. Some carried hurt pack members to safety. Others grabbed weapons. Zara felt her wolf rise again, ready. We fight humans now? Roman nodded. We try not to kill them. They are not our real enemy. But we will stop them. They ran up hidden stairs to level ten. There the hunters were breaking doors, searching floor by floor. Roman's wolves waited in the dark hallways. When the first hunters came, Roman gave a single command: Disarm. Disable. Do not kill unless you must. Zara shifted to wolf form. Silver fur shone under the emergency lights. The fight was different this time. No teeth against teeth. Wolves moved like shadows, knocking guns away, pinning men to the ground. Zara jumped on a hunter with a silver net. She crushed the net under her paws and growled in his face until he dropped his weapon. Some hunters fired silver bullets. Pain burned where they grazed pack members, but the wolves were fast. In minutes, the hunters were on the floor, hands tied with their own zip ties. Their leader — a tall man with cold gray eyes — stared at Zara in wolf form. The silver wolf, he whispered. The legends are real. Roman shifted back to human and stood over him. You attacked the wrong pack tonight. The man laughed, even tied up. This is bigger than you, alpha. Governments know now. Scientists want her blood. Armies want her power. You cannot hide anymore. Zara shifted to human form. She stood tall, naked again, but strong. I am not a thing to take, she said clearly. I am Luna of the Vale pack. Tell your people: leave us alone, or face all of us. The hunter looked into her silver eyes and stopped laughing. Roman ordered the hunters carried out and left on the street for police to find. No deaths. A message, not a m******e. Back in the safe level, the pack gathered again. New wolves — the three defectors — helped heal the wounded. Everyone was tired, but proud. Roman took Zara's hand. Dawn comes soon. The rain stops. We held the tower. We grew stronger. Zara looked at the faces around her — family now, forever. But the hunter's words stayed in her mind. The world knows about wolves now. Everything has changed. She leaned against Roman. What happens next? He kissed her forehead. We build a bigger pack. We find allies. We show the world we are not monsters. And if they still come for me? Roman's arms tightened. Then we fight. Together. Always. Outside, the storm clouds broke. First light touched the wet city. Somewhere far away, Cassian howled in anger. Closer, new howls answered — wolves running through the streets toward the tower. They came to join the silver Luna. The pack was growing. The war was growing. But for the first time in many years, wolves felt hope.
