On the way to Luke’s room in the adolescent residence wing, Evan found Clint escorting the sullen boy down the hallway. As the preacher approached them, Clint held up a hand and warned, “Bernice says you’re not to see him. Maybe you can get her to change her mind, but I can’t. She’s not around, and neither is the doctor.” Evan came close, gave Luke a reassuring look, and asked the orderly softly, “Could I just have a word with him? It’s kind of urgent.” Clint took a look around, then muttered, “Two minutes,” and stepped away a few paces to give them privacy. But he kept an eye on them. Evan asked the boy, “Luke, you thought Melissa felt she was floating. I was thinking they’d drugged her. But I wonder, what if she’s on a boat?
