The church’s coffers being particularly low this time of year, the banquet was a fundraiser for the Loving Embrace bereavement committee. A dozen chickens were gnawed to the bone along with mounds of mashed potatoes, rivers of gravy, buckets of coleslaw, steaming platters of buttered corn, and generous dollops of collard greens simmered in lard. The evening remained uncomfortably warm and humid, and the doors and windows of the fellowship hall were left wide open. The iced tea was replenished frequently, even though all the ice had melted early on.
