In the reception area at the clinic, a young woman Evan hadn’t met who was at the desk reported that Ms. Richards wasn’t on the premises today and couldn’t be reached. Dr. Wilmer wasn’t present either but was expected later. Evan had been sure to bring his letter of authorization from Shackleton, so after a cursory inspection, he was granted a visitor’s pass. But Leon had no such credential, and despite Evan’s vouching for him as a trusted associate, the receptionist wasn’t about to make that leap of faith. (Leon’s scruffy appearance probably didn’t help.) Evan offered Leon the car keys so he could run errands, especially since the preacher’s pantry was bare. Leon accepted them and mumbled something about sticking to the plan, offering to wait in the lobby.
