Evan entered the sheriff’s office to find Mal Griggs seated behind the boss’s big desk and the other officers, including Chet Otis, absent. Facing the deputy alone meant Evan didn’t have to wink at the sheriff to hint why he needed to have a confidential word or two with the junior man.
Evan set the can of coffee down on the desk as he took a seat confidently in a guest chair.
“The sheriff’s at a training with Frank and Nolan,” Griggs explained. Then, eyeing the coffee, he added, “But I guess you knew that. They’ll get lunch on the county, and I’m stuck on the desk. Something I can do for you?”
