In the depths of an Overseer ship, in the heart of a cavernous chamber with walls that gave off a hellish light, a pool of organic goo bubbled. Amino acids formed proteins; proteins formed cells, and cells joined together to make a skeleton, musculature, veins, capillaries and organs. Eyes filled the empty sockets; teeth sprouted from gums. Skin covered the body from head to toe.
A trembling hand broke through the surface, trails of slime dripping from its fingertips as it strained for something, anything to hold.
She could feel her heart beating like a hammer.
