Chapter 11: Ramón Sacramento was a new experience for Sam. California was part of Mexico, and the architecture of the city, the dress and language of the people were all sources of fascination. The first Spanish phrase he had to learn was Yo no hablo Español, as he was often approached by the local citizens, who had assumed, from his Indian countenance, he was of their culture.
