The day after he and Miki reported the bullying incident to the principal, Jax couldn't shake the feeling of anger and frustration that had taken hold of him. He had always been popular and well-liked, and seeing the other side of high school life through Miki's eyes was a harsh awakening. The whispers and stares that followed Miki throughout the day made Jax's blood boil.
As the final bell rang, Jax waited outside Miki's last class, determined to walk him home. When Miki emerged, his expression weary and his shoulders slumped, Jax greeted him with a reassuring smile.
"Ready to go?" Jax asked, trying to infuse his voice with cheer.
Miki nodded, managing a small smile. "Yeah, let's go."
As they walked through the school gates, Jax kept a close eye on their surroundings. He didn't want anyone else to get the chance to harass Miki. They made their way down the sidewalk, the afternoon sun casting long shadows.
"Miki," Jax began, breaking the comfortable silence. "I know this is tough, but I want you to know that you're not alone. We reported that post, and things will get better."
Miki sighed, a mix of hope and doubt in his eyes. "I appreciate that, Jax. I really do. It's just... hard to believe sometimes."
Jax stopped walking and turned to face Miki, placing a hand on his shoulder. "I get it. But we're in this together. And I want you to remember something: you have so much to offer. Your talent, your kindness—they're things these bullies can never take away."
Miki looked up at Jax, his eyes glistening with emotion. "Thank you, Jax. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"Hey, what are friends for?" Jax replied with a grin. "Now, how about we grab a snack before heading home? My treat."
As they sat in a nearby café, munching on fries and sipping milkshakes, Miki seemed to relax. The conversation flowed easily, moving from school to favorite movies and music. Jax was reminded of why he had been drawn to Miki in the first place: his genuine nature and the way he saw the world.
That evening, as Jax lay in bed, he found himself thinking back to the moment he had first heard Miki sing. The raw emotion in Miki's voice had resonated deeply with him, and now he realized why: Miki's strength came from his vulnerability, and his ability to face his fears head-on was something Jax admired.
The next day, Jax and Miki walked to school together. As they entered the building, the whispers and stares started again. Jax could see Miki tensing up beside him. Determined to change the narrative, Jax put an arm around Miki's shoulders and spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"Hey, everyone! If you have something to say, say it to me," Jax declared, his voice ringing out in the hallway. "Miki is my friend, and I won't tolerate any more of this bullying. Got it?"
The hallway fell silent, and Jax could see the shocked expressions on the faces of their classmates. He felt Miki relax slightly under his arm, and he gave him a reassuring squeeze.
As they headed to their first class, Jax noticed a few of his teammates giving him nods of approval. It seemed that his message had gotten through to at least some of the students.
During lunch, Jax and Miki joined their friends at their usual table. To Jax's surprise and relief, everyone welcomed Miki warmly. They chatted and laughed, and for a while, it felt like any other day.
After school, Jax invited Miki to watch his swim practice again. This time, he could see the difference in Miki's demeanor. He seemed more at ease, more confident. Watching Jax glide effortlessly through the water, Miki's face lit up with admiration.
Once practice was over, Jax walked over to where Miki was sitting. "So, how did I do?" he asked with a playful grin.
"You were amazing, as always," Miki replied, his smile genuine.
"Thanks," Jax said, sitting beside him. "You know, I was thinking... maybe you could join the music club. I bet they'd love to have someone with your talent."
Miki looked thoughtful. "Maybe. I'll think about it."
"Take your time," Jax said. "But know that whatever you decide, I've got your back."
As they left the pool area, Jax felt a sense of accomplishment. He knew that standing up for Miki was just the beginning. The road ahead might be tough, but he was ready to face it, as long as they were together.
