The days following that PE class were unlike any Miki had experienced before. He found himself looking forward to school, a strange and exhilarating feeling. Jax made it a point to seek him out, whether it was in the hallways, during lunch, or after class. Slowly, Miki's life at New East High School began to change.
One afternoon, as Miki was sketching in his favorite corner of the library, he heard a familiar voice. "Hey, Miki! Whatcha drawing?" Jax's cheerful tone broke the library's silence, drawing a few disapproving glances from nearby students.
Miki quickly closed his sketchbook, feeling a surge of embarrassment. "Just, um, some doodles," he mumbled.
Jax plopped down beside him, undeterred. "Come on, let me see. I bet they're awesome!"
Reluctantly, Miki opened the book, revealing a page filled with intricate character designs and fantastical landscapes. Jax's eyes widened with genuine admiration. "Wow, Miki, these are amazing! You have so much talent."
Miki's cheeks turned pink at the compliment. "Thanks," he said shyly. "I just do it for fun."
"You should show these to more people," Jax suggested. "They're too good to keep to yourself."
Miki shook his head. "I don't think so. I'm not really good with attention."
Jax smiled softly. "That's okay. But if you ever want to share, just know I'm here to support you."
Their friendship grew stronger with each passing day. Jax introduced Miki to his friends, a lively group of students who welcomed him warmly. For the first time, Miki felt like he belonged. He even started to come out of his shell a bit more, laughing and chatting with his new friends.
One evening, Jax invited Miki to watch his swim practice. Miki hesitated, unsure if he should go, but Jax's earnest invitation won him over. The pool was a bustling hub of activity, with swimmers cutting through the water like sleek fish. Miki watched in awe as Jax effortlessly glided through the pool, his movements graceful and powerful.
After practice, Jax joined Miki in the bleachers, water dripping from his hair. "So, what did you think?" he asked, toweling off.
"You were amazing," Miki said honestly. "I've never seen anyone swim like that."
"Thanks, Miki. It means a lot coming from you," Jax replied with a grin. "Hey, we're going to get some food. Wanna come?"
Miki's first instinct was to decline, but something about Jax's hopeful expression made him reconsider. "Sure, why not?" he said, surprising himself.
They headed to a nearby diner with a few of Jax's teammates. The conversation was lively, filled with laughter and friendly banter. Miki found himself enjoying the camaraderie, even joining in with a few jokes of his own.
As the evening wore on, Miki and Jax found themselves walking home together. The streets were quiet, the night air cool and refreshing. They walked in comfortable silence for a while, the sound of their footsteps echoing softly.
"Thanks for coming tonight, Miki," Jax said suddenly. "It really meant a lot to me."
Miki smiled. "I'm glad I came. I had a lot of fun."
"Me too," Jax said, stopping in front of Miki's house. "Hey, I was thinking... There's a school dance coming up. Would you like to go with me?"
Miki's heart skipped a beat. "Go with you? Like... as your date?"
Jax nodded, his eyes sincere. "Yeah, as my date."
Miki felt a whirlwind of emotions—fear, excitement, hope. "I'd like that," he said quietly.
Jax's face lit up with a smile. "Great! It's a date then."
As Miki watched Jax walk away, he felt a warmth spreading through his chest. For the first time, he allowed himself to hope that maybe, just maybe, he could have something more than friendship with Jax. And for the first time, he felt a glimmer of courage to face whatever challenges might come their way.
