No Way Back

CHAPTER 2 Christen Wood stood frozen in front of the desk as the weight of Dominic Hales words settled deeper into her chest. The contract still rested in her hands but it suddenly felt heavier than anything she had ever carried before. The silence in the room stretched. Outside the glass walls the city continued to move as if nothing important was happening yet inside that office it felt like time itself had stopped. Christen finally lifted her eyes toward Dominic Hale. Why me. Her voice came out softer than she intended. Dominic did not answer immediately. Instead he moved back toward his chair with slow deliberate steps as if he already knew she would ask that question. Because you are the only one who walked into my world without being invited. Christen frowned slightly. That makes no sense. It does. You just have not understood it yet. He sat down again and leaned back with a calm that irritated her more than it comforted her. Christen looked down at the check again. Her mind kept trying to calculate how many problems it could erase at once. Rent. Debt. Survival. The weight of poverty that had been choking her for months. Then her eyes shifted back to the contract. What exactly is this. Dominic gestured slightly. Read it. Christen hesitated before lowering herself into the chair opposite him. The leather felt too soft. The room felt too expensive. Everything about it reminded her that she did not belong here. She opened the folder. Her eyes scanned the pages slowly at first then faster as confusion deepened into shock. It was not a job contract. It was not a business agreement. It was something else entirely. A personal arrangement. A binding association. Terms that made her stomach tighten as she read further. Her voice broke the silence again. You want me to live here. Yes. You want me to be available whenever you call. Yes. You want me to sign away my privacy. Dominic leaned forward slightly. I prefer the term controlled access. Christen shut the folder immediately. That is insane. For the first time Dominic Hale smiled but it was not warm. It was calculated. Almost amused. Is it. Yes. Then walk away. Christen froze again. The simplicity of his answer confused her more than the contract itself. Dominic stood once more and walked toward the window. His back was now facing her as he looked out over the city lights. You are not the first person to sit in that chair. Christen stayed silent. Most people who come here already know what they want. Money. Power. Influence. You on the other hand look like someone who has no idea what she is doing in the same room as me. Christen clenched her fingers. I need money not whatever this is. Exactly. That word cut through her instantly. Dominic turned back around. Then this should be simple for you. Sign it and solve everything. Walk away and keep struggling. Christen stood abruptly. Do you enjoy doing this to people. Doing what. Trapping them. Dominic studied her for a long moment. If I wanted to trap you Christen Wood you would not be standing. You would not be debating. You would already belong to me in ways you could not undo. The words made her breath catch. He continued calmly. I am giving you a choice. Most people never get that. Christen looked away toward the city outside the glass. Somewhere down there people were living normal lives. Struggling yes but free in ways she suddenly realized she had taken for granted. Why me. she asked again but quieter this time. Dominic walked back to the desk and placed both hands on it leaning slightly forward. Because you are desperate enough to consider it but stubborn enough to hesitate. That combination is rare. Christen felt anger rise in her chest. You do not know anything about me. I know enough. The words landed too precisely. Silence returned again but this time it felt heavier. Christen slowly sat back down. Her mind was torn between fear and necessity. Between instinct and survival. If I sign this what do I become. Dominic tilted his head slightly. You remain Christen Wood. Only your circumstances change. That is not an answer. It is the only one you need. Her eyes dropped to the contract again. The pen lay beside it like it had been waiting for her arrival long before she ever stepped into the building. Her hand hovered slightly above it then pulled back. This is not normal. Normal does not fix your life. Christen swallowed hard. And if I refuse. Dominic stepped closer again but stopped just short of her personal space. Then you go back to your landlord. You lose your apartment. You lose stability. And you continue surviving day by day until something eventually breaks you completely. The honesty in his voice made it worse. Christen closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them again she looked exhausted. You make it sound like I have no choice. Dominic replied softly. Everyone has a choice. I am simply showing you the cost of each one. A long silence followed. Christen finally reached for the pen. Her fingers trembled slightly as she picked it up. Dominic watched her without blinking. Her voice came out barely above a whisper. If I regret this. You will not have the luxury of regret. That answer should have stopped her. It did not. Christen looked down at the signature line. Her breathing slowed. Her thoughts blurred. Then she signed her name. The moment the ink touched the paper something shifted in the room. Not physically but in a way she could not explain. Like a door had quietly closed behind her. Dominic picked up the contract and examined it briefly before placing it back into the folder. Good. Christen looked up immediately. That is it. That is it. She stood again. So what now. Dominic pressed a button on his desk and the elevator doors behind her opened almost instantly. Now you come with me. Christen hesitated. Where. Home. The word did not feel right coming from him. She slowly walked toward the elevator again but every step felt like she was moving deeper into something she could no longer see the edges of. Dominic followed behind her without rushing. As the doors closed she realized something unsettling. She had walked into the building as a desperate woman trying to survive. But she was leaving it as something else entirely. And she did not yet know what that meant.
