My heart was pounding in my ears, I really needed these high stress situations to slow down. My hair was going to fall out before I knew it. I need to get out of here. This man is a psychopath he thinks he can keep me here? Run. I pushed off of the couch and sprinted towards the front of the house. One, two, three, four, five... I keep pushing my legs into the floor trying to put as much distance between Cal and myself. Six, seven, eight... Passing the dining room we were in before. I can hear footsteps behind me and I know he’s following me closely. Nine, ten... a strong arm wraps around my waist halting my run instantly. He hoisted me up over his shoulder and began walking towards the stairs.
“No! Put me down!” I screamed at him and hit him over and over on the back. He kept a firm grip on my legs keeping me from moving too much. He opened the door to the room I had been in before. He placed me down on the bed and turned to leave. “Wait! Cal please don’t leave me in here.” My voice was pleading. I didn’t want to be left alone in this room again even though he was the one who put me here. He stopped and slowly turned to look at me, his eyes were the dark blue form before which I had noticed happened when he was angry. His face was set in a hard stone look. I searched for any ounce of emotion but found none.
“Please Cal, I’m sorry I am scared I don’t know what to do.” I felt a pull to make him believe me, to look at me the way he did at dinner again. Why should I care how he feels about me ? But I can’t help it. The pull inside felt like a string between the two of us. “Look I want to listen to you and I will listen.” I stood slowly and walked cautiously over to him. He let out a long breath and his face softened lightly.
“Sit down.” I listened and sat on the edge of the bed. “You can’t run Wren, I can’t lose you and if you run I will get angry and I can’t promise I can keep my wo.... impulses at bay.” His voice was full of restraint, I could tell he was angry but he was trying to keep it in control for me. I nodded to let him know I understood.
“So I am your mate? So you think I’m your soulmate or something?” I asked him, afraid of the answer.
“It’s sort of like that, there is a lot to tell you and I can’t promise you will understand it all but you will, in time.” He walked over to the bed and sat next to me, his eyes were beginning to change back to their original blue which helped me relax. His closeness makes me shiver like an electrical current between us.
“ I am a leader of sorts for my culture and now that I have found my mate, you my people will be excited to welcome you as my...”
“Slave?” I sarcastically cut him off.
“No. Luna.” His face was inspecting mine.
“Luna? Like the moon?” I asked, confused.
“Yes, like the moon.” He chuckled. “Luna is a term used for the physical form of the moon goddess reincarnate. An alpha’s mate.”
“Oh and I suppose you are the “alpha” here?”
“I am. So that makes you a Luna and a very important one at that.” He smiled and lightly touched my hand sending sparks up my arm.
Goosebumps covered my arm from his touch as I took a sharp breath. “You are everything, Wren, I have waited for my mate for 6 years. I began to think I would never find you.” Cal’s fingers still brushing the top of my hand.
“I.. I don’t understand, this isn’t natural or normal Cal.” I stood and walked to the window to look out at the pitch darkness that had now swallowed up the trees and mountain. “I don’t even know you, or where I am for that matter.”
"I know it is a lot to understand. I didn't expect you to jump in my arms and love me at first sight. Well if you were a... not that it matters but one of my people." Cal stood and walked to the door. "Goodnight my moon, I will see you for breakfast if you would like to join me." He opened the door slowly and left me standing there watching the darkness stretch throughout the forest.
My mind was racing through the last few hours. Something felt different, I should feel different right? I should be scaling the wall by tying sheets and blankets together. To leave, to escape. My eyes felt heavy as my body began to relax as I took in the dark view. Something caught my attention in the corner of my eye. A shadow running in to the thick trees at the edge of the yard. It was Cal jogging into the woods removing his shirt and tossing it to the side. Then like a nightmare his body began to bend in ways I had never seen with my own eyes. His body twisted and snapped like a horror film, I couldn't look away.
The man who was just sitting in the room with me was replaced with the main character of my nightmare, the black wolf from the woods. My legs gave out from under me and I fell towards the widow hitting it trying to catch myself. The noise from my episode caught the beast's attention and he turned his head around to the house and his glowing amber eyes fell on me. I pulled myself away from the window and into the bed pulling the covers over myself to shield myself from the world.
He is my nightmare, my wolf.
