Chapter 16

1926 Words
My breathing hitched into my throat, I didn’t understand why my body would respond this way to ...him. I could faintly hear his body shift off the bed and his slow stalking stance came towards me. Soon his scent engulfed me, I closed my eyes and tried to steady my breathing but I just wanted to take all of him in. His chest radiated heat into my back and through the plush towel. My only protection from his ever piercing eyes that always left a trail on my skin. It was like my skin could sense his closeness, almost instantly goosebumps raised on my skin. As if it was reaching out for him to touch. I knew he would be able to see the reaction my body had from his proximity. I felt his fingers lightly graze down the back of my neck and to the center of my back stopping where the towel was secured. I have never been more grateful for my handy knot that kept the veil from falling. “You really shouldn’t come in front of your mate in only a towel when you know you are not ready to give yourself to him.” Cal’s voice was deep and dark as he placed his nose and mouth into the crevice of my neck and shoulder. I could feel his lips brushing my skin followed by the teasing tip of his nose. “I … I didn’t mean to do that, I had no clothes in the bathroom to put on.” I stumbled over my words, trying to push away the sensation of sparks left in his wake. “You could have asked me to bring you some?” His voice had humor in it but I couldn’t see what was funny about this situation. “But no my Luna decides to put on a towel to hide herself from her mate, her alpha and tease him.” By the end of his sentence he was back to deep and dark Cal again. I let a sly grin grow its way on to my lips. I can play his game just the same. I turned to his front swiftly and looked up into those deep sea eyes. He was curious as to what sudden confidence I had portrayed to him. With a small tug of my knot the towel let go of my body. It swooshed to the ground and pooled around my feet. All while maintaining eye contact with “my mate”. “Excuse me, Alpha”, I stressed the word on my lips. “ I would like to get dressed for bed now.” I stepped to the side and walked back into the bathroom and closed the door behind me. I made sure to not run in fear he would follow but also not slow enough for him to catch up to me. I quickly dressed in the clothes I selected and reopened the door not knowing what to expect. My heart was like thunder in my ears, I swallowed it down and stepped out into the cool air of the room. When I opened the door he was gone. The room was empty and quiet. The curtains lightly swayed away from the window that was now open letting in the crisp night air. So much for not letting me out of his sight. I mean I didn’t want a babysitter, even a beautifully sculpted one. I felt my heart strings pull a little, I felt alone, sad. I walked over to the far side of the bed and pulled the covers back, climbing into the huge bed alone made it feel cold and not as welcoming. I sat up and leaned against the headboard and let out a huff in frustration. What am I doing? Why am I even here to begin with? I spotted the blanket on the couch from my earlier snooze. I slipped out from under the covers to retrieve it. I wrapped the soft fabric around my shoulders and pulled it close to my chest, it pooled at the floor and engulfed me in warmth. I was not at all tired and only came up stairs to this room because Cal deemed it was time to turn in. I was not a child to be scolded and put down for bed. A small fire burned within me thinking of being coddled and cooed at like a baby. The more I thought about being confined the more the little light grew brighter. Having no idea where Cal had sulked off to, I decided to make my own way around the house. His office down the hall made its way to the front of my mind, those doors on the other side of the room, where did he say they went? Another wing of this gigantic house? I tightened my grip around the blanket and slipped through the bedroom door and made my way into the dark hallway to the double doors that I had eased dropped through only a day earlier. The door was unlocked and inside the office the only light was from an amber shaded lamp on the desk. I stepped inside and closed the door behind me easily. Cal’s office was not very welcoming in the night hours as shadows filled the shelves and stretched along the wall and ceiling. The amber light seemed to be at war with those shadows, trying to brighten the room and rid itself from the lurking figures. I stayed along the wall as I made my way to the other set of doors. One hand held the blanket to me and the other I let out of the cover to trace the molding and shelves on the wall. It smelled like him in this room, it invaded my senses and pulled me forward, deeper in. A twinge in my belly made my free hand quickly pull back into the safety of my covers. “I am not going back into that room alone”, I told myself. I came to the other set of doors and slowly turned the handle not knowing what or who could be on the other side. The door didn’t budge though, I felt disappointment at the end of my adventure. A small glow from the keyhole caught my attention, It looked to be an old style skeleton key lock. Quickly I looked around on the dark walls to find the key to open the door. If this was Cal’s office he has to have a key handy to get through the door. He couldn’t just bust through doors everyday; it would be extremely tasking to replace. Okay Wren back to the key, I looked along the door frame and reached high to run my fingers along the top of the door. Nothing. To the right was a bookshelf filled with binders, books of all sizes and titles, and other knick knack items. I traced my fingers along each of the shelves and sides to find it. Again I came up short. My eyes loomed over to the desk, papers and folders scattered about in different piles. My eyes started to adjust to the light as I neared it. My attention was brought to a photo frame sitting under the lamp, it was a small and golden frame. The frame was an oval of golden vines that intertwined with one another and around the edges flowers bloomed. Inside the frame was a beautiful woman with dark brunette hair that flowed past her shoulders, almost to her hips, it curled slightly around her face. Her eyes were a grey that I had never seen before, they almost seemed to glow through the photograph. Whoever she was she was stunning, and a light pang hit my chest. I heard footsteps from the way I had come in and suddenly was worried Cal might find me snooping. As quick as they came down the hallway they left just the same. I decided to get back to the bedroom and pretend to be asleep. I looked at the woman one last time before retreating to the door and making my way back into the now freezing bedroom. I lowered the window before climbing back underneath the covers and switching off the lamp on my side of the bed. Sleep took over my over active mind which I welcomed with open arms. CAL POV Damn that woman! She flaunts what is mine in front of my eyes and then walks away? I was running through the yard to the tree line pushing myself to get further from that bedroom before doing something foolish that would ruin everything. I can’t ruin it, even though I know it should be different, no it will be different than before. I need to keep focused on keeping my wolf down and away from Wren. I linked my Beta “Make sure to have someone stationed outside of my bedroom NOW!” “Yes Alpha I’m on it.” Even though I didn’t think Ezra would come back so soon I wasn’t taking chances with Wren. I just want her to be safe and protected, the only way to make sure of that is to keep her close to me or my most trusted inner pack members. Flashes of her perfect skin fill my mind, her green eyes burning into mine, damn it! I wanted to devour every inch of flesh, ravish it and turn it into my very own road map of pleasure. Learning the spots that made her moan, arch, squirm, smile, giggle, say my name. My name and no one else on those full pink lips. “Alpha she’s not here.” WHAT?!?! I could feel him cower from my aura of power and anger. It wasn’t my mens fault that she could follow a simple order of staying put. “Check the down stairs for any breaches in or out, I’m on my way.” I wasn’t far from the house. I just needed to get some air and space from the tension. If she keeps running off then my wolf isn’t going to stay calm for much longer and I didn’t want to scare her away anymore than I had already. I could feel her curiosity growing, I knew she felt the sparks and pull towards me by the way she reacts to me. “She’s here, Alpha. She is in the bedroom now, I could sense her before, maybe she was in a different room.” My beta’s message sent a wave of calm through my body, she was safe and that is all that mattered. Soon I was walking back up the stairs at the house and making my way to my room. Now that the beast in me was tamed away I could be close to her again without losing control. Sending my beta home I quietly entered the room and her scent filled me up. She was sleeping soundly and I watched as her back lightly rose and fell with her deep breaths. I didn’t want to wake her or startle her by getting into the bed so I decided to take the couch across the room. I grabbed the blanket from the foot of the bed and laid in across myself as I got situated to sleep. The blanket was warm and smelled like my mate and I was grateful to the mother goddess that I would be resting in the same room as my Wren tonight.
