Chapter 1

1009 Words
Blood was everywhere, but under the moonlight, Faye didn't care. She had a job to do. She looked merciless yet dangerously beautiful as she ducked from an attack when her mask was torn apart. “You're going to die today," one of them growled as they started to change. Faye smiled cooly. “Nah. I doubt it." The wolves’ movements were a blur as she fought off them, her weaponry and strength her only savior. But she wasn't scared, her blades slicing through the air with deadly precision. Her face was a mask of fierce determination, her eyes flashing with an intensity as she took down one wolf after another. The sound of snarls and yips filled the air, punctuated by the sickening crunch of bone and flesh as she struck through time and again. She was breathing hard, but it seemed the harder things got for her, the more excited she was. She was going kill all of them. Finally, the last wolf fell to the ground, its body twitching under her foot as she wouldn't let up. Faye stood panting, her chest heaving with some effort, as she scanned the environment around her. The silence that followed was oppressive, the only sound the heavy breathing of her under the bright moon of the night. As she stood there, taking in the aftermath of all that had happened, saw two individuals emerged from the trees, their faces set in grim lines. It was her father and sister. They didn't seem to be breathing as hard as she was. She walked towards them, the large knife in her hand dripping with blood. She didn't bother to turn around because she knew everyone was dead. “Hey, guys," she said quietly, almost reaching them. "Faye. Don't worry, we'll handle it from here," her father called out, his voice low and even. Faye's gaze flicked towards them, and that's when she saw it from the corner of her eye- a wounded wolf, slipping away unnoticed into the underbrush. For a moment, Faye's eyes locked onto the wolf, her body tense, contemplating what exactly to do. But then she simply turned away, walking towards her family without a word. She didn't know why she did that, and there was a likelihood that she'd regret it. But that was fine by her. Her father and sister, Lyra, didn't seem to have noticed anything out of the ordinary, and her father nodded in approval as Faye approached. "You're doing a good job, kiddo," he said, his voice a little softer now. “You’re even stronger than before. You really deserve a break." Faye nodded curtly, feeling a numbness spreading through her chest. She didn't say anything, and just gave her sister a tight hug before waving them goodbye. But her father stopped her, a smile on his face. “Forgetting something?" She let out a laugh. "Sorry.” They hugged, and right after, Faye just turned and walked away, leaving her family to deal with the aftermath of the battle. The walk home was a blur, Faye's mind replaying all she'd done in her head. She got into her car and drove home, right after changing from her bloody fits. She didn't notice the familiar houses and streets passing by, her eyes fixed on some point in front of her. When she got home, she felt nothing but emptiness. Her house, which she'd fought her family to move into, was cold. Letting out a sigh, she went straight to the photos on her mantle, her fingers tracing the face of her mother, smiling back at her. Moments later after a shower, she yawned, feeling the weight of her exhaustion catching up with her. Without another thought, she climbed into bed, letting the softness envelop her. The next morning, Faye woke up feeling refreshed, but uninterested in the day ahead. She lay in bed for a moment, staring at the ceiling, before throwing off the covers and getting dressed. She had to work at the diner, and she wouldn't be able to afford to slack off, no matter how much she'd rather stay in bed. She really could just quit, but sometimes she actually liked going outside to do something with her life that wasn't supernatural. The diner was quiet when Faye arrived, the early morning quite dull before the lunch rush that she knew she had to be prepared for. She clocked in, exchanging a nod with the other waitresses and waiter, and started prepping for the day. Her movements were automatic, her mind elsewhere, as she went through the motions of taking orders and serving food. Thankfully, there weren't many people in and they didn't seem to be in a hurry. Mostly because De Santos Diner was a new place in town that everyone was trying to get used to. With how good the food and menus are, it's likely there'll be crowds of people around every time of the day. Faye leaned on the counter, bored and letting out yawns. Then they walked in- two large and tall men, one of them so handsome it made Faye's heart skip a beat. He caught her eye, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. She felt herself being nudged and turned to face one of the waitresses called Karen. The woman was older and had a sly smile on her face. “Want me to go take their order or will you do it?" she asked her. Faye was amused, raising an eyebrow. “I will." She sauntered over to their table. "What can I get you?" she asked, her voice cool, but her eyes locked onto the handsome stranger. His friend spoke up, giving their order. He smiled at her. "I'm Thane," he said, his voice low and smooth. "And you are… Faye." She smirked. “Yes, I am." He really was handsome. But she wasn't interested in getting into anyone's pants just yet. It would be fun to have someone hot to look at once in a while though.
