Sophomore year finished, ending nothing like when it had started. For one, Ma was on the cusp of stardom. For two, I was officially dating Trevor. For three, Brain was dating a girl named Veronica—so, yes, he was living with a girl named Betty and dating a girl named Veronica. And as for four, Curtis had broken off with Aaron, who was still going with us to Ma’s taping because, broken up or not, no way was he missing out on The Tonight Show—his words, not mine. Anyway, by then I didn’t care. The war was over. I’d won. Let him have his consolation prize. Plus, somehow in all the commotion, we’d sort of, kind of, almost, also on the cusp, wherever the hell that was, became friends, especially once him and Curtis had broken up.
