Everyone heard the growl.
The three strangers stopped smiling.
Damon stared at me like he was seeing something impossible.
My mother whispered,
“Luna… don't let it take control.”
“What are you talking about?”
The voice inside me answered before she could.
“Let me out.”
I grabbed my head.
“Get out of my mind!”
The stranger closest to us stepped forward.
“You can't fight it forever.”
Damon moved between us.
“Leave her alone.”
The stranger laughed.
“You're still protecting her?”
“I always will.”
My mother looked at Damon.
“You don't understand. If she loses control, everyone here will die.”
My heart stopped.
“Mom…”
She looked at me.
“You were born during the Blood Moon.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means you're not part of the wolf bloodline.”
I stared at her.
“Then what am I?”
Before she could answer, the moonlight suddenly turned red.
The forest shook.
The mark on my palm spread up my arm like black veins.
I screamed.
Damon rushed toward me.
But something inside me pushed him away.
He hit the ground.
“Damon!”
He looked up at me.
His eyes widened.
“Luna…”
“What?”
“You have the eyes of the first one.”
My mother covered her mouth.
“No…”
The stranger smiled.
“The heir has finally awakened.”
I turned toward him.
“Heir to what?”
He pointed toward the blood-red moon.
“To the kingdom your mother ran from.”
Then every wolf in the forest dropped to the ground.
And bowed to me.
