Chapte 9 - The Lie

287 Words
"Damon killed my father?” I stared at him. Damon said nothing. That silence was answer enough. “You lied to me.” “I was trying to protect you.” “By letting me believe my mother was dead? By hiding who my father was?” His jaw tightened. “You weren't ready.” “Ready for what?” He stepped closer. “The truth about that night.” My mother interrupted. “Damon, stop.” “No.” He looked at her. “She deserves to know.” My mother went pale. Damon turned back to me. “I didn't kill your father.” I froze. “But your mother told me—” “She told you what she needed you to believe.” My mother shook her head. “I had no choice.” Damon's voice hardened. “You always had a choice.” I looked between them. “What happened?” Damon took a breath. “Your father was already dying when I found him.” “Who hurt him?” He looked toward the forest. “The Bloodborn.” “Then why did you take the blame?” “Because they wanted you.” My heart pounded. “They threatened to kill you if I didn't make everyone believe I was responsible.” I stared at him. “You protected me?” “I promised your father I would.” My mother's eyes filled with tears. Then a branch snapped behind us. Damon immediately turned. “We're not alone.” A familiar voice came from the darkness. “You finally told her.” The stranger stepped into the moonlight. And I recognized him. He was the man from my childhood dreams.
