Wait!
A chill seized Maddock, raising gooseflesh at the back of his neck. The whispered voice had surely been just one more figment of his imagination—his subconscious making one last desperate attempt to deny the unflinching reality of the situation.
But then he saw Bones turning toward the pool, his face barely visible in the gloom, his lips forming a word. A name. “Aycayia?”
He heard it, too!
Then a different sound reached Maddock’s ears. It began as a low rumble, like the sound of a distant freight train, but quickly grew in intensity. As it did, Maddock would have sworn he heard the hoofbeats of an approaching cavalry charge.
