The structure reminded Maddock of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, but fully intact, with all its columns—thirty-eight of them including four in the interior—still standing, and a pristine rectangular enclosure within. The light was emanating from one end of the rectangle—the open front entrance, or pronaos—but as Maddock stepped between the outer columns, the inner light dimmed, while the Caduceus in his hands began glowing brightly. He approached the doorway at the rear of the pronaos and held the staff out to illuminate the worship hall—the naos. The walls and ceiling were smooth, unadorned and undisturbed by the passage of time, but where the floor ought to have been, there was only a large pool of water.
