The heavy steel door hissed open with a low, hydraulic groan. Ayla stepped through the threshold, the dim fluorescent lights reflecting off the barrel of her silenced pistol. Her footsteps were quiet, deliberate, but there was a subtle flicker of fatigue in her eyes. The tear gas above had left her hairline damp and her coat smelling of acrid smoke.
Zaviyar didn't draw his gun. He stood by the glowing console, his silhouette framed by the green-and-white static of the surveillance monitors.
"You took your time," Zaviyar said, his voice flat, stripped of the warmth he had shown her over the past few weeks. "Though I suppose my father always made his mazes a little too complicated."
Ayla paused, her weapon leveling directly at his chest. "Your father is dead, Zaviyar. And his maze ends at the vault door. Step away from the main console."
"Does it?" Zaviyar gestured toward the central screen, where his father’s frozen image remained paused, those piercing gray eyes staring directly into the room. "He built this place for us, Ayla. Not just for me. You thought you were hunting me for the syndicate. You thought you were the mastermind playing the long game."
He hit a key on the terminal, unpausing the video feed. His father’s raspy voice echoed through the metal bunker once more. "...raised her in the shadows... executing the final phase of my plan..."
Ayla’s eyes narrowed, her grip on the gun tightening until her knuckles turned pale. For a fraction of a second, the cold composure she wore like armor cracked. She looked from the screen back to Zaviyar, a shadow of genuine hesitation crossing her features.
"He's lying," she snapped, though her voice lacked its previous absolute conviction. "He used everyone. He used you, he used me."
"He used us to force my hand," Zaviyar took a slow, deliberate step forward, ignoring the pistol trained on his heart. "He knew I would never claim the empire willingly. He needed someone ruthless enough to hunt me down, someone clever enough to strip away my peace until I had no choice but to fight back. He trained you to be the catalyst of my return."
"I work for the Syndicate Council now," Ayla said, stepping closer, trying to reclaim control of the room. "They gave me the contract. They promised me freedom once I delivered the heir."
"The Council doesn't even know this bunker exists," Zaviyar countered, his voice dropping to a low growl. "Look at camera six. The syndicate trackers didn't follow you here—they followed your team to the safehouse and executed them. You’re trapped down here with me. To the Council, we are both loose ends."
Before Ayla could reply, a harsh red strobe light flashed across the console. A high-pitched alarm blared throughout the sanctuary. On the main surveillance feed, tactical units clad in unmarked black armor flooded the upper tunnels, planting explosive charges along the structural pillars.
The Council wasn't coming to claim the vault. They were coming to bury everything inside it.
Ayla looked at the monitors, then back at Zaviyar. "Four minutes," Zaviyar said calmly. "You can shoot me now and die in this cage, or help me tear down the empire my father built."
