You may think I could have concocted a more direct way for Judy to exact her revenge on Rex. You’re probably right. So why did I pick this method?
Trees take a long time to die. Even after they’ve been cut up and chopped to pieces, they’re still alive, all those bits. Like the saguaro that Rex tried to steal. Even though it had been uprooted and essentially destroyed, it was still going to be alive for maybe ten years. That’s how long it takes the flesh to truly understand that it has met its doom.
It isn’t quite as long with oaks, but the principle applies. Even after wood has been butchered, you can feel it alive under your hand. It’s a slow dying. That seemed just right for Rex. What do you think? Oh, I can feel you on the other side of the page, squirming.
