10 Solitude Morris had some money stashed under his mattress. He retrieved it and put it in his pocket. Then he left Louisa and Hector’s house and decided he would be Mort Harney. He went downtown to the train station. He had always wanted to travel by train and this seemed as good a time as any. There were some good things happening in Oregon, he had heard. The economy was tanking up there and that meant a lot of land was available for cheap. At the train station he considered how he might steal himself a ticket north but decided that would be too much trouble. Instead he used the money from his room, and bought himself a ticket to Portland. I observed all this with a certain detached amusement. After all, Mort was going back to his birthplace.
