Chapter Eleven Her cell phone dinged just as she hung up the office phone, trying to figure out what to do with a little boy who was quickly slipping through the cracks to be forever lost. Yet again, she hadn’t found one family who would actually do right by him. She thought of his mother, then of her boss, who still hadn’t replied to her request to broaden the search. There were days she wanted go back home, crawl into bed, and pull the covers over her head. She wondered now if this was why she’d been forced to live in the places she had, with the kinds of people who should never have been allowed to care for a kid.
