*Norah* “Does it hurt Hector when the babies bite him like that?” Diego asks. Kneeling in the last stall with Diego and Julieta, I wait for Julieta to answer the question. “No, little one,” Julieta says softly. “It does not hurt Hector. They are not biting. They are suckling.” “When will Hector leave his babies?” He looks up her, asking. “Hector will not leave her babies,” Julieta assures him. He looks confused. “Why?” “Because Hector is their mama.” Julieta explains. “But my mama left me.” Diego says. My chest aches with his conclusion. He is fascinated with the cat and I can't help but feel that he is more interested in what it must be like to have a mother than in what it is to be a cat. Everyone seemed to assume he would blithely accept that he has no mother, yet all around
