Fractured Plans for the little wolf

The air in Sage’s small room felt heavier than usual, pressing down on her as if the walls themselves were conspiring against her. The low hum of the house seemed louder in the oppressive silence. Every creak of the floorboards or whisper of the wind outside set her nerves on fire. She closed the door behind her carefully, her heart pounding in her chest. Her hand trembled as she slid the bolt into place. The echo of Kael’s voice still lingered in her ears, his cold, possessive words coiling around her thoughts like a snake. "Angel." She shook her head violently, trying to banish the memory. Crossing the room, she knelt by the far wall, her hands fumbling to move the small dresser aside. She bit her lip to stifle a gasp as it scraped against the floor, the sound unnervingly loud in the stillness. Every second felt like an eternity. Her fingers worked frantically to pry it open, her nails digging into the wood until it gave way with a soft pop. Inside was her secret. A worn leather bag sat in the hollow space, still there! She thought to herself, its edges fraying from years of use. Sage carefully took its contents out and placed them onto the floor. A few crumpled bills, a map of the surrounding territories. She had been hoarding this small collection for months, piece by piece, in desperate hope. And every night, she just liked to make sure it was still there…. Her eyes darted to the door as the faintest creak reached her ears. She held her breath, her body tense, straining to hear if someone was outside. Nothing. Not yet. Sage’s hands shook as she began counting the money, her mind racing. Was it enough to get her far enough away? Could she even make it out of the territory without being caught? The idea of Kael finding her; or worse, catching her; made her stomach churn. She shoved the money back into the bag, her movements becoming jerky and frantic. A sudden knock at the door made her jump, her heart slamming against her ribs. “Sage?” It was one of the housemaids, her voice muffled but curious. Sage swallowed hard, forcing her voice to stay calm. “Yes?” “Alpha Kael wants to see you in his office.” Her blood ran cold. “Now?” she managed to ask, her voice wavering. “Yes. He said it’s urgent.” The sound of retreating footsteps signaled that the maid had left, but Sage didn’t move. She sat frozen, staring at the scattered contents of her escape plan. Kael knew. Or he didn’t. She never knew what the horrible man was thinking! Her mind raised with the possibilities. Maybe this was just another one of his mind games, another attempt to rattle her, to keep her under his thumb. But the thought of facing him now, after what had just happened, made her feel like a caged animal. Why couldn’t he had just stayed the boy she knew was a child, a family acquaintance that she was never able to really get to know. Why couldn’t they had just stayed in their respectable places? Why did he always have to reach out to her, even though she tried to stand so far away from his real reality. She was the only one that has listened to his father’s warnings. That Sage and Keal lived in to different worlds! But it could never be helped even when Keal proposed to Sage in front of his Luna all those years ago, they were nothing more than childhood acquaintances. Why on earth would he do such a thing? She shook her mind back reality, her breaths coming in short, shallow gasps. The loose panel snapped back into place, her muscles straining as adrenaline coursed through her. She pressed her back against the wall, clutching her knees to her chest, trying to steady herself. The dim light from her single lamp flickered, casting eerie shadows across the room. “Sage,” she whispered to herself, her voice trembling. “You have to get out of here. You can’t wait anymore.” But she wasn’t ready! The quiet of the house felt suffocating as she stood, her legs shaky beneath her. She glanced at the door, dread settling in her chest like a stone. She had no choice but to go to Kael now. Straightening her shoulders, she tried to summon the composure she didn’t feel. If Kael suspected anything, she would have to play her part perfectly. With one last glance at the hidden compartment, Sage opened the door and stepped into the darkened hallway. Preparing her mind in case he wanted something more, because her worst fear was that he didn’t know of her plans… he just wanted her; tonight.
