CHAPTER 19
AN INCIDENT
Elena sluggishly walked towards the Questura di Milano. A weathered, dull-brown, flat-topped building with rectangular windows, the police station, looked drab and old. The officers exiting the building wore dark blue jackets and light blue trousers, each with a thin purple stripe. She watched as two police officers entered a light blue car with a white stripe and “Polizia” written on the side.
She reached the arched entrance, and took a breath when stepping inside the police station, wondering if she was doing the right thing. Behind the counter, a man with a multitude of wrinkles and a paunch stood with crossed arms and bore his eyes deep into her soul. Maybe he was suspicious of everyone. Maybe he’d been on the job for far too long and failed to trust anyone.
