SURVIVAL FOR THE FITTEST

"Pheew!" I breathed a sigh of relief as I sneaked quietly into my room. I was lucky, that mum was on a night shift. If she found out I spent the night in a random hotel, with a man whom I didn't know, she would be so mad. It was just thirty minutes past three. I still had about 3 hours to catch some good sleep. I fell onto my bed and drifted into deep sleep immediately. THE NEXT DAY. POM! POM! The knocks on the door rang loudly in my ears. It was no other than mum. "Sweetie, I made breakfast already. You had better get up or you'll be late for school." My mum said as she walked away from my room. I never wanted morning to come. Now, I would be meeting with that cheat and backstabber. "Today please be good. Please!" I prayed beneath my breath, as I pushed the duvet off my body. I slipped into my pink pair of slippers and headed to the bathroom. After spending a long period of time in the bathroom trying to get the stranger's smell off me, I came out with a towel tied around my body. I dried my body and slipped into the new blue jean and black turtleneck shirt, mum got me a week before. I wore my black wristwatch and carried my cross bag, which contained the books for the lectures I was going to attend this morning. I looked in the mirror and I seemed perfect, but one thing was missing. My necklace! I hurriedly checked the pocket of the gown I wore the night before, but it wasn't there. I searched my bed and purse thoroughly, but still I couldn't find it. There was only one answer to the missing necklace. I must have forgotten it in that room, with the stranger last night. No! That necklace was gone forever. The stranger must have left, and even if he was still there, I still couldn't go. It would be awkward seeing the man who took my virginity, not to talk of asking him about my missing necklace. The necklace was the only thing I had left of my dad that was personal. He gifted it to me seven years ago, before he and mum got separated. I carried my bag and rushed downstairs to eat a portion of the food on the table. "You should eat slowly honey, else you'll choke on it." My mum had always watched out for me before and after dad left. "Mum… I'm leaving." I managed to say with my mouth full. "Take good care of yourself honey. I love you!" IN SCHOOL. "Hello class, we have a new transfer student." Mr Omar announced as a young lady walked in. A smile suddenly tugged at the lady's lips, it was faint yet eerie. "What are you waiting for? Can't you speak?" Scarlett shouted at the new student upon seeing her nervous and quiet. "That b***h!" I cursed silently. "Hey Scarlett, don't be mean to the new girl." The professor said in a defensive tone. "Errmh my name is Aria Rodriguez and I'm pleased to meet you all." "You can go have your seat, dear. See you in the next class." Mr Omar smiled brightly and walked out of the class. Aria shrugged her shoulders and walked towards the empty seat beside, the leader of the incredible four. "And what do you think you're doing?" Aria stood frozen, but at the same time her lost eyes met with the cold and aloof eyes of Scarlett. "Erm I … I want to sit here, since it's the only empty seat in class." Aria stammered. No one had ever thrown her off balance like Scarlett. Aria was slain by Scarlett's sharp glares. "What are you acting dumb for? You don't know what you've done? Aria, let me tell you. Mason is a military zone, a no go area for some random girl like you!" Aria subconsciously stepped back. Mason! It was Mason Miller again. That b***h! She didn't even hide the fact that she stole my man anymore. "He is a no go area for you as well!" I fired at her without thinking twice. I knew I shouldn't be fighting to get back a man who enjoyed every moment of s****l intimacy he had with my boyfriend. I just had to stand up for the new student. "Girls, I swear it was an accident. I promise not to mess around him again." Aria smiled, hoping Scarlett would drop her hatred and loosen up a little. "Shhhhhhhhhh! I didn't ask you to speak." Scarlett responded harshly to the new girl, before turning to face my direction. I knew whatever was going to happen, wouldn't end well. But I was prepared for the worst. Afterall, what could be worse than bumping into my boyfriend in bed with my best friend? "Do you really want the truth, Kira?" Scarlett asked, wearing a mischievous smile. I was shivering already. I felt like I was going to pee in my pants. "Mason doesn't love you. Take a good look at yourself girl, you are just a poor girl on scholarship in this prestigious college. You have nothing to offer him." Oh no! Tears were streaming down my face all over again. Hearing all of that from someone who was once my best friend hurt me on a different level. "And you, I'll spare you today just because you're a new girl. You won't be this lucky next time." Scarlett said, pointing at Aria, as she kicked me in the knee so hard that I bent over in pain, with tears flowing down my eyes. I gritted my teeth, inexplicably feeling aggrieved. "Girls let's go. I'm in a good mood today." The girls threw hard stares at Aria and I before leaving. They were gone already. There was no one around to help me up or clean my bruised knee, aside from Aria, as the students all left when the commotion began. I laid on the bare ground, writhing in pain as Aria rushed down to check my bruised knee. "Hey, I'm sorry about what happened. I'm sorry for putting you in trouble with those girls." She helped me up and cleaned up my bruises. "My name is Aria. You seem like the only nice person in this school. Everyone seems not to like me." I scoffed. "You should be careful and learn how to defend yourself when alone. The incredible four can go any length to make you disappear but you've got to be strong." I advised as she dressed my bruised knee. Does she always walk around with plaster and cotton wool? She seemed cool and reserved, compared to that proud b***h. "Thank you for helping me out today. I'll pay you back someday." I smiled. My smile was harmless but as bright as the moon. Aria cleared her throat. "Errmh can we be friends?" "Why do you think I'm the right person to choose as your friend?" I asked, searching her eyes for answers. Aria thought for a while before speaking. "Well, like I said earlier, you seem nice and warm hearted. We're similar, so we would make a wonderful pair." I wore a smile and nodded in agreement. "Okay. Friends it is." "We should go eat in the cafeteria." Aria announced. As she made to help me leave the classroom, all our course mates rushed back into the class, whispering amongst themselves. What was going on? Did Scarlett do something this time?
