Paulus added, “You’ve got me curious now to see what your girls are like when I get to grips.”
Tibullus was immediately anxious again. “You won’t do anything, er, ungentlemanly with them?” he asked.
“Good gracious old chap, mistreat them do you mean? Come now, you know me. It’s illegal anyway.” That was true. There were imperial laws against mistreatment of slaves – though they were notoriously difficult to enforce.
Paulus added, “I don’t do anything very strong. A bit of fun with the whip, that’s about the limit to it.”
Tibullus jumped. “You mean you’ll whip them?”
