Hailey’s POV:
“So, where would you rather be?”
“To be honest, my bed.” I said without thinking.
“Fair, me too.”
There was an awkward silence between us for a moment and I took a sip of my drink.
“Is it okay to ask if you’re with someone?” He leaned forward because of the music and I picked his scent. It was warm and for some reason, it fit his look.
“You already asked so I guess it is.” I raised my shoulders and tilted my head lightly.
“So, are you?” He seemed really curious to know.
“Well… it’s complicated.”
“Ouuu, I love complicated.” If he knew.
“I’m in the middle of a divorce.” I dropped.
His countenance changed, it was like he had pity on me and it wasn't the type of complicated he was expecting.
“I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay, I’m getting through it.”
“It’s his loss though, I wonder what more he could have wanted.”
"What can I say, one can never be enough."
“Tonight is not the night to talk about him, you should have fun.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
He already asked about me so I think I can do the same. A part of me felt guilty for wanting to inquire about someone else’s romantic life but a part of me wasn’t too.
Maybe the purpose of coming out this evening would be fulfilled.
“How about you? Are you single?”
“I don’t know.” I looked at him with suspicion.
“That’s interesting to know for someone like you.” I said while avoiding eye contact.
“You don’t even know me.” He said in the middle of a hard laugh.
“That’s true, but you look too good to be single.”
“You’ll be surprised.”
If anyone told me an hour ago that I’d be having a conversation with someone I didn’t know and actually enjoying it, I wouldn’t believe it.
I looked towards the dance floor again and my eyes met with Belly’s, again.
“Are you okay?” She mumbled and raised her thumb.
I gave an affirmative nod and she went dancing.
“Your sister again?”
“Yeah, she was just checking in.”
“Would you like to dance?”
“No.” I said blatantly.
“That hurt.” He held his chest.
“Please?”
I looked towards the dance floor and I didn’t imagine myself there, at least not tonight but then I already engaged him in a conversation, I might as well have fun.
“Fine.” I gave up.
He picked up my purse, stretched his hand out and I placed mine in it. He had really soft palm. We both left the bar stand and I walked behind him towards the dance floor.
I felt like a girlfriend again in that moment and I absolutely loved that feeling.
“You dance, yeah?” He asked as we stopped walking.
“I can try.”
“Okay, take your time.”
I wasn’t the best at dancing but I tried till I was relaxed then at some point, he placed his hands gently on my waist and I wanted to pull back but I didn’t, I was enjoying it a little too much.
“I love your hair.”
I didn’t reply but I blushed really lightly, he probably didn't notice.
We locked eyes most of the time and I could tell he was flirting but I didn’t mind because I was enjoying every bit of it.
He spun me around to the rhythm of the song playing and I saw Belly, again. She smiled so widely but I felt shy and turned back around really quickly. Cole also noticed and I felt embarrassed.
“Sorry.”
“It’s okay, you’re good.”
His voice, it got me thinking about things a recent divorcee shouldn’t be thinking but once again, I loved it. I was dancing with this man I just met and my mind wasn’t wandering to Raymond or the divorce.
“I think you dance pretty well.” He said.
“Oh, thank you.” I laughed.
Belly came over and as embarrassed as I was, I had to do the introduction.
“This is Belly, my sister.”
“Hi Belly, nice to meet you, I’m Cole.” They shook hands.
“Likewise, thank you for keeping my sister company.”
“I should thank you.”
“Why?”
“For bringing her out tonight.”
I just stood there and watched them converse. Belly was smiling all through the conversation. She rubbed my hand softly and she walked past us.
“I think I’d sit now.” I told Cole.
“Of course.” He led me back to the bar stand.
“Another drink?” He asked as we sat.
“At this rate, I’d most probably be dealing with a hangover by morning.”
“You’ll be fine.”
Still in the middle of discussing, this razz looking man walks up to me.
“Hey pretty, can I have your number?”
I looked at him with so much disgust because not only was he rude by not acknowledging that I was with someone, he also stared at me hungrily, I’m talking eyes on my cleavage and not moving.
“No, you cannot.”
He still insisted and Cole stepped in.
“The lady said no.” Cole’s voice was stern. He stood up for me in that moment and that stirred something in me.
The argument got heated and I didn’t want that attention, not in a club.
“Can we just leave, please.” I pulled him a little.
He grabbed my purse and we walked outside.
“Are you okay?” He sounded concerned.
“I’m fine, thank you.”
“Where do we go?”
“Ummm, let’s just walk.”
We walked away from the club a bit and just talked.
“Sorry about him.”
“It’s not your fault but thank you.”
“Where do we go now?” I asked.
“We could go somewhere private.”
I understood what he meant almost immediately and I wasn’t mad at it.
I think he noticed how I felt.
“It's okay if you don't want to."
"It's not like I don't want to."
"What's it like then."
"I'm going through a divorce and I don't know if any of this is right."
"Okay Hailey, no pressure."
I stopped walking and he did too. I turned to him and just stared for a bit.
He moved his face towards mine and gave me a light kiss, then drew back but I wanted more, I was hungry for more. I leaned towards his face and kissed him again, this time, not light.
"We should get a room" I said as we broke the kiss.
"We definitely should."
"Do I get my car?" He asked.
"We have to go all the way back to the club." That would increase the wait time and I didn't want that.
"Let's get a cab then." I said gently, I didn't mean to sound desperate but I really was.
On our way, I felt nervous and excited at the same time.
I think Cole could tell I was nervous so he held my hand. I'd never thought any guy from a club would care so much about a woman he's with for one night.
"It's just s*x with a hot guy." I told myself.
The wait between booking the room and getting to it felt so long but I was ready.
We got up to the room and the nervousness i thought had gone creeped right back.
"Hailey, if you don't want this, please let me know."
"I do, just... give me time."
I kissed him again and that was a greenlight.
The way he touched me, it was warm and passionate.
He gave me kisses at the most random time and places too.
Honestly, I'd forgotten how good s*x felt. Since I had Sophia, I can count the number of times Raymond and I actually had s*x.
But this random stranger made me feel safe, he was gentle with me.
He fell asleep almost immediately and realized I just did something I would never have thought of doing but the best part was that I didn't regret it.
