Audrey Pov:
Still trying to make sense of what just happened in the sitting room, but nothing. I couldn't come up with a logical explanation as to what that was.
I mean it couldn't be my mum. That voice was way deeper than hers. That wasn't even a woman's voice that sounded like a male. But it was just me and mum in the room and I told no one about the ring, except Vicky and Jay. which means Mum knows nothing about the ring.So who was that.
To make things worse it looks like the voice came from my head which is f*****g impossible. Maybe I was just imagining things due to stress. Yes, that has to be it. It's my imagination.
"Earth to Audrey" I heard a voice say, immediately bringing me out of my haze.
I looked at my mum who was staring at me worriedly. "Is everything alright?" She asked looking concerned.
I contemplated telling her about the incident but quickly dismissed that thought. She does not need to know. It will only make her worry. I just nodded and gave her a reassuring smile. Seeing how worried she still looked, I rolled my eyes sighing." Mom am really okay. I just remembered something that's all." I told her with my most convincing look, hopin she would drop the issue.
Thankfully, Luck was on my side. She just stared at me for a moment before continuing whatever she was saying.
"Well as I was saying, today is our last day here. We should make the most of it dear. There still so many places we need to visit you know." She said very excited.
"Do we really have to." I grumbled. I know it was my idea to come visit New York but honestly I think am kind of homesick already. I really can't wait to go back home.
"Audrey" Mum calls. "Hmm" I say still in my thoughts. "Why on earth do you keep zoning out. Is everything really alright." She says sounding really worried and a bit frustrated. "Christ, am fine mum. if you don't believe me then that's your problem."
I said, failing to hide the frustration in my voice. "Okay Okay, if you say so." she says, before running her hand through her hair and sighing. She goes quiet for a while before speaking again. "You know you can tell me anything right?" She asks with hopeful eyes.
I look over at her before nodding and giving her a little smile." I know mum. And am always here for you too." I say before give her a short hug." I love you."
After pulling away from me she looked over at me with determination in her eyes. "Now its time for exploring. So go get ready." she says, already back to her giddy nature. I look at her, not at all shocked at her behaviour. Rolling my eyes and shaking my head I walked back into the room to quickly change. Maybe She's right. I think I need to clear my head a bit.
I stripped out of my clothes and threw on my biker's shorts and a big shirt and some sneakers before stepping out of the walk in closet and joining my mum in the living room. "Good you are ready. Now let's get going." She said, going out and gesturing me to follow. Which I did.
"O my God, New york never seize to amaze me. It's so busy and crowded which makes it so awesome." Mom says excitedly, while licking her ice cream cone, and sincerely I couldn't agree more. It was so exciting to see how busy it was here.No one gave a f**k about you here.
Back home everyone knew everyone, nothing was hidden. Its nice, but I really would prefer it if no one gave a s**t about my business. I smiled a little already imagining my life in New york.
"Hey dearie am gonna get some things your sister asked me to buy. I will be right back Okay. Oh, and don't forget to turn on your location so it would be easy for me to find you." She said.
"Don't worry mom I will be fine. You go do your thing. And yes, I will turn on my location, so don't worry. You would get the chance to keep me on a tight leash."
I said giving her a small smile, before turning and walking away.
I got to a quiet alleyway with only a few people around it. Inhaling the fresh air I couldn't help but smile. It was so nice here. I looked up at the sky and the sun was about to go down already. Sighing,
I turned to go back to times square knowing I needed to find mom.
Before I could get off the alley I saw a man in a black hoodie staring at me from the other end of the alley, eyeing him weirdly I turn to leave. "Where is the ring." I heard again in my head, stopping me dead in my tracks and making me turn around.
I stare at the strange figure of a man who was still standing there in his black hoodie that covered his face. Building up enough courage I decided to go to him.
I turned and started walking towards him determined to find out if he was really following me . Almost there . "Audrey, hey Audrey." My mom screamed gesturing me to come over to her.
Sighing, I closed my eyes and screamed internally. Why did she have to come now. I thought. When I opened my eyes. He was gone. Disappeared into thin air like he was never there.
I looked around trying to get a trace of where he must have gone. I mean he couldn't have gone that far in seconds. But nothing. There was nothing, it's like he just disappeared.
"Audrey, come here we need to get back it's getting dark already." Mom said.
Running my hand through my hair, I turned and headed back to my mum.
I feel like am going crazy.
Once we got back to our hotel room. Mum went into the bathroom to take a shower. Leaving me alone in the sitting room. I couldn't shake the feeling of that man. He looked so familiar. Like I have seen him before and this weird voice I keep hearing in my head. Could I be imagining it?
I was so lost in thought I hardly saw mom getting out of the bathroom in her night gown and heading towards me.
"Am going to order dinner, want some?" Mom asked. "No need. I don't feel hungry." I say quickly before standing up and heading to the bathroom. I took a quick bath, wanting nothing more than to not be alone right now. Heading into the bedroom in my night gown. I saw mom eating her dinner while watching a movie.
I got into bed and put on my earpod, playing soft music trying to force my mind to relax and drift into sleep.
But still, I couldn't sleep. My mind was so preoccupied.
