Sloane's POV
I woke up the next morning with mixed feelings. Not sad per se, but not happy either. Today was the day when everything was finally coming to an end. Sterling had already severed our bond saving me the stress of having to go through it, but still I can't help but feel some kind of way. If not for anything for the sake of my boy. I can't even imagine him growing up to discover his birth parents are assholes. I wish I can shield him from this truth, but it's inevitable that he'll find out someday.
I went about my morning low key, not wanting to draw attention to myself, and by 12 noon I was set and ready to walk into my freedom.
I had just one important thing to do:I needed to tell Toby about what's happening.
I found Toby, and explained things slowly and in the best possible way to him. And after explaining to him I'm the simplest way ever that we would be leaving and not coming back, Toby stared at me for about ten seconds before asking me a question that broke my heart–what about dad?
I was silent for a moment, not sure what to respond.
As if sensing the difficulty I'm having in answering his question, Toby wrapped his arms around me. “I love you mummy,” he murmured, and I almost burst into tears.
How could life be so cruel?
No.
How could the goddess be so cruel? She could have just sent Toby over to me directly instead of through Parents who only saw him as a pawn.
I crouched down and wrapped my arms so hard around him I feared I'd crush him.
“I love you too, buddy,” I said with utmost sincerity.
We stayed in each other's embrace for a few minutes before Toby broke the hug. I made my way back to my room,to get my bag-a bag I usually use for my Pack hiking supplies, one that'll definitely not draw suspicions.
I went back to Toby's room to see him seated at the edge of the bed, his shoulders tensed.
"Time to go," I told him.
Immediately, he relaxed and leaped into my arms. Together we snuck out of the house.
My ears were perked up to catch the slightest sound as we slipped across the lawn and down a hidden trail behind the yard. Every moment I half expected that we would be caught and dragged back.
Finally I saw the idling small, grey car parked just a few distance from the Pack house. The driver, my contact, Noah's, actually was already waiting.
Leaning out of the window, his eyes darting from me to Toby, he asked, "Are you sure about this? Once you leave, you become a rogue and you can never return."
"I know that," I told him.
He shrugged, opened the back door. I got in and we were off.
With every mile we covered, I relaxed a little more. Hours later, after taking several back roads, we crossed the border into neutral territory. Toby slipped into a doze.
I must have dozed off too because I suddenly woke up with a jolt to the sound of squealing tyres. I was thrown forward against the front seat.
The driver cursed as he stamped on the brake. Breathing hard, I looked around wildly, my first thought that Albert had somehow found us.
We were parked on the road beside a field. Two sleek SUVs had blocked our path. Several tough looking men all dressed in black were getting out of the cars.
"What's going on?" I asked the driver but he merely shook his head.
A tall man in a grey suit was the last to come out. With the other men flanking him on each side, he approached my side of the car.
"Luna Sloane," he said, bending at the waist to knock on the glass. "A word, please.”
