Celeste pov.
As I sat on the bed, my mind clouded with a thousand thoughts. There were knocks on the door every now and then, but I didn’t respond.
The first was my mother. She had kept knocking, over and over, trying to speak to me, trying to convince me to let her in so she could explain.
She said I needed to understand that I was her child too, that she never meant to hurt me.
But the part that truly made me want to laugh was when she said she loved both Liora and me equally, that she cared for us both and was only trying to do what was best for the two of us.
I just sat there quietly, listening to her from the other side of the door. I didn’t say a word.
Then Liora came, pleading with me to at least let our mother in, saying she was really worried. And when I still didn’t respond, the tears started.
I could hear my mother-in-law downstairs, calling me evil and heartless.
Eventually, my mother gave up. My father had called her, told her they should leave.
He hadn’t even bothered to come check on me or say a word but then again, it wasn’t like he ever had.
When I was told I’d be marrying a man I didn’t even know, I had gone to him, desperate for an explanation—anything.
But all I got was a cold look and a sharp order to get out of his study because he was busy.
Even now, after everything Liora had done, he still hadn’t said a thing. Not that it would matter.
I looked down at the floor and took a deep breath, thoughts swirling.
But then, a loud knock suddenly echoed at the door, followed by an angry voice.
“Hey! Open the door right now. Are you going to stay locked in all day? I can’t believe how lazy you’ve become.”
I recognized the voice instantly—even without seeing her.
My mother-in-law.
“Mum, I’m hungry. Get her to cook something for us,” Madison’s voice followed in a sharp whisper.
“After eating the breakfast Liora made this morning, I don’t think I can stomach another one of her meals.”
My gaze flickered to the door as I listened in silence.
“You— you better not say anything to Liora. If you can complain, then why don’t you go and cook instead? Liora is pregnant and she’s still cooking for us, so you better keep quiet.”
Madison scoffed, and I could practically hear her rolling her eyes at her mother.
“You want me to cook and destroy my nails? Do you know how much they cost, Mum? And the baby bump hasn’t even shown yet—you're treating her like she’s made of fragile glass.”
She shot back, and her mother huffed in annoyance.
At this point, I wasn’t sure if they didn’t realize I could hear them or if they simply didn’t care. Either way, I chose to ignore them, flopping back onto the bed and staring up at the ceiling.
“You’re so spoiled. Liora is carrying your brother’s child. You better be nice to her,” my mother-in-law snapped, and Madison only grumbled before whining,
“I’m hungry, Mum. Should we just order food? There are no maids here. Let’s go home, at least we have maids back there.”
My mother-in-law cleared her throat and hissed,
“Of course not! I can’t leave Liora here with this evil girl.”
And then she began knocking again.
“Celeste, I know you can hear me. You better come out now and join your sister in the kitchen and cook lunch! I can’t believe how rude you’ve become!”
Her voice grew louder when I didn’t respond, the knocking more insistent.
“Are you deaf?! I know you can hear me! I said come out!” she roared.
I simply closed my eyes… and waited.
“How dare you ignore me? Do you think you can do whatever you want? You better open this door, Celeste, or else you’ll regret it on the count of three!” she hissed from the other side.
When I still didn’t respond, Madison whispered,
“I think she’s ignoring you, Mum. Let’s just leave her and order something. She didn’t even answer her mum or sister, so I doubt she’ll answer you.”
However, that only seemed to make my mother-in-law angrier. She banged on the door even harder.
“Who cares if she didn’t answer them? I’m her mother-in-law, and I won’t take this disrespect!” she growled.
“If you don’t open this door on the count of three, Celeste, then prepare to be divorced from my son. I won’t condone this!”
To be honest, I was close to dozing off as her voice continued screeching from outside. As she began counting, I lazily lifted a hand to my mouth and yawned.
“Ah, she must really think I’m joking? I’m counting now—one!” she shouted.
A few seconds passed in silence before she continued, “Two!”
There was a brief hesitation, but then she finally screamed, “Three!”
Just then, the sharp ding of my phone snapped me fully awake. My eyes flickered to the screen.
Emma: I’m here.
As soon as I saw the message, I got up from the bed and walked to the door. The moment I opened it, my mother-in-law, standing beside Madison stared at me, wide-eyed in shock. But before that smug expression could fully form on her face, I shoved past her, nearly knocking her over. If it hadn’t been for Madison catching her, she would’ve hit the floor.
I ignored the sharp gasp behind me and continued downstairs.
The moment I reached the bottom step, I spotted Emma standing at the front door and Liora, wearing an apron, stood in front of her with a guilty expression on her face.
As I stepped closer, I heard Liora murmur under her breath.
“Emma... I know you're upset with me about what happened, but please… let me explain. Maybe if you hear me out, you’ll understand…”
She said softly, and I raised a brow as I watched her try to reason with Emma. I wasn’t surprised. Even though Emma was my best friend, Liora had always been close to her too—and now that I thought about it, it had almost felt like she was trying to steal Emma away from me.
There were times she’d make plans with just Emma and herself, deliberately excluding me under the excuse that I “wouldn’t like” what they were going to do. And Emma, back then, never went without me. If I wasn’t going, she wouldn’t either.
Now, as I watched Emma’s cold glare cut through Liora like a blade, I wasn’t the least bit shocked by the words that came out of her mouth.
“Understand what? That you spread your legs like a slut for your sister’s man? Or that you’re shameless enough to carry his child and live under the same roof as her like nothing happened?” Emma’s voice was like venom—low, cold, and laced with fury.
“You make me sick, Liora.”
