The clock read 4:07 a.m. Lucas was in the hospital, still wearing the mismatched clothes he threw on in a panic. One side of his shirt was untucked, his belt loose, and his eyes heavy with fear. He hadn't slept; he couldn’t. His mind kept flashing back to the blood. So much of it on the floor, on Beck, on his hands. He had driven like a madman, breaking every speed rule just to get here. Now he was outside the emergency room, barely able to keep his eyes open when the door opened. The doctor walked in slowly, exhaustion written all over his face.
