Lukas:
The drive back to the pack house was totally silent, with Mia stealing awkward glances at me once every two seconds till I could not take it anymore.
“What is it?”
She hesitated for a while before speaking.
“The doctor informed me about my condition. She said I might have a miscarriage”
“Do you want to get rid of it?”
She turned sharply, looking at me like she had just seen the most horrible creature.
“Of course not! I'm going to keep this baby and protect it as much as I can” her eyes clouded over. “It's your child too but you sound like it's none of your business”
I pressed my lips together. I hadn't expected that reaction.
I wanted to explain that I was only worried about her but I kept quiet.
“How do you plan to protect it when you can't even eat properly?” I murmured but loud enough for her to hear me.
“I'll try my best from now on” I glanced at her as she nodded her head resolutely.
We had just arrived at the pack house when a car pulled up behind us.
It was Rina.
I turned to Mia.
“Go inside. I'll join you soon” she nodded obediently and walked away without looking back.
“What do you want?” I asked, dipping my hands in my pocket.
She gasped, her eyes wide like she just heard the most ridiculous question.
“Seriously? You have ignored my calls for weeks and I came to see you because I was worried only to see you acting all lovey-dovey with that woman and this is what you ask me?”
“Careful. She's the Luna” I warned, not pleased with the way she addressed Mia.
“Now you are taking her side? Lukas, you promised me. You said nothing will change between us” her eyes welled up with tears. “Please tell me everything is still the same as it was before” she said desperately.
*You should go back. We'll talk about this later”
She bit her lower lip so hard that it drew blood as she glared in the direction Mia went.
“I don't know what she did to you but I won't let her take you away from me” she turned around and stomped off.
Mia was unpacking her things when I got to the room. I stepped inside, half expecting her to ask if Rina was, but she didn't say a word.
“I heard you let Owen go. Thank you, Alpha Lukas”
At the mention of that rogue, my expression turned sour.
“Don't think about useless stuff and focus on yourself” I said coldly, shutting the closet and heading to the door.
“Also, you can call me Lukas”
She nodded after a few seconds.
“It’s late. Where are you going?”
“Running” I said simply and slammed the door shut.
Nothing like a run to get my mind off the unwanted feeling that was beginning to creep up my heart for a while.
I ran towards the forest and transformed into my wolf, Kai, succumbing to my primal instincts as I leapt into the forest.
The wind whipped through the tall trees, the breeze ruffling my fur. My paws bounced off the soil, jumping over fallen tree branches and trunks.
I ran without stopping till I reached a high point that overlooked the sea.
No matter how much I tried get my mind off her, Mia was all I could think of.
I looked at the sky and howled at the crescent moon in frustration.
I spent a few more minutes there before heading back but not to the pack house.
At the heart of the forest was a small cottage that served as my lair. Only Michael knew about this place. We had found the place together many years ago and would often train there.
I felt another presence in the cottage and, at the speed of light, grabbed a gun from the rack.
“Wait! It's me” Michael yelled, his hands up.
I lowered the gun.
“What are you doing here?”
“I was about to come see you when you left the pack house in a hurry. I knew you were going to come here eventually”
“That doesn't answer my question” I said, returning the gun to its place.
“Are you alright? You seem worried”
“I'm fine”
“Your expression says otherwise. Is this above Mia?”
“If you don't shut up, I'll drive a bullet in your crotch. Now tell me why the f**k you are here or leave”
He stayed silent for a while, probably wondering whether to continue talking about Mia, clearly not fazed by my threat.
“The annual werewolves’ ball is around the corner. It's our turn to host it. The letter came this morning from the Silver Circle”
The werewolves' ball was held every year and hosted by different packs and several packs from all over the world present.
The Silver Circle, the council in charge of all the packs in the world made the decision of which pack comes next.
“We won't”
Michael frowned. “What do you mean?”
“It is exactly as you have heard. We won't be hosting the ball”
“You do know we are not allowed to refuse this, right?”
“I don't care. Mia is in no condition to plan a ball”
“She doesn't have to do that. We can hire an event planner or plan it ourselves. How hard can planning a ball be? We have to do this. We can't get on their wrong side when you just became Alpha. You can make new allies through this”
“I'm not sucking up to anyone”
“Anyway, I'll start making preparations. I don't care if you say no. This is for your sake” He said and stormed out.
When I returned to the pack house the next morning, Mia was still asleep but the place was abuzz with preparation.
Michael sure was fast.
Weeks passed by in a flash and there was only a day left to the ball. Mia was still in the dark. Her morning sickness had gotten worse and she rarely got out of bed.
Her stomach had gotten so big that she could hardly walk. Unlike humans, werewolf pregnancies progressed rapidly.
However, that day, she was unexpectedly energetic.
"Is something happening? Everyone seems so busy" she noticed
"We are hosting the annual werewolves ball this year. It's happening tomorrow"
"Isn't that supposed to be organized by the Luna of a pack? How come I didn't know about it?”
"I told everyone not to inform you "
"Why?" She interrupted before I could go any further. "You don't think I can do a good job?”
Her eyes were brimming with tears.
I heaved out in frustration. She has been overly emotional lately and would cry over anything and everything.
"Is that why you instructed them to keep it from me?" she probed.
"Knowing wouldn't have made any difference. You could hardly get up because of your morning sickness but you want to plan a ball?" I shook my head. "Go back and get some rest. I have things to do"
I said and left.
Why could she not see that I was
doing this to protect her?
I stood, inspecting the final look of the hall when a maid rushed in, gasping for breath.
“Luna Mia….. she's missing”
