When Helena opened her eyes the next morning, her first thought was that she had woken up in a luxury hotel. Sunlight was streaming through the massive glass wall, revealing a sweeping view of the green valley below that took her breath away.
And for the first time in a long time, Helena actually enjoyed her sleep.
The bed was soft, the AC was working and the blanket was thick. Her light had been cut off for a month now. Not only has she been sleeping in the dark, but in the heat.
She yawned expressively as she stretched her body on the large king-size bed before getting up.
Her eyes caught a single abstract painting hung on the wall, simple but elegant. To someone who had spent her whole life scraping by, seeing this level of space and beauty used just for a spare room felt entirely unreal.
Unfortunately, she was going back to her miserable life today.
Sigh.
She doubted Adrian would let her spend another day in his house.
“Well, life goes on,” Helena muttered as she made her way to the luxurious bathroom connected to the room.
There, she found a change of clothes, untouched women's products and a toothbrush. She didn't expect a man like Adrian to be this considerate, but then again, he had cooked their meal last night.
After having her bath and changing her clothes, she made her way downstairs. She could smell the aroma of breakfast right from the stairs.
Seeing Adrian cook again this morning, Helena did not feel weird about it.
“Good morning,” she greeted as she sat on the same stool she occupied yesterday.
“Hmm,” Adrian hummed in response.
Helena tried to peek at what Adrian was cooking. She saw he was frying eggs. She felt so happy, especially with the smell of toast that filled the air.
“Do you enjoy cooking?” Helena asked him.
Seeing as the entire house was empty and Adrian was cooking his food, Helena suspected he mostly did everything himself.
Adrian did not respond to her question though. He finished making the food silently and served them.
“Thank you for the premium breakfast,” Helena joyfully ate to her fill. She couldn't remember the last time she had a good meal.
While she was eating, she suddenly remembered her backpack.
“Hey, could you do me a favour?”
She glanced at Adrian who was eating his own meal, but at a slower and more professional pace, a contrast to how he ate his noodles yesterday.
He raised a brow at her.
“I left my backpack at the party yesterday and I don't know how to get it back.” Her entire life was literally in the backpack. Her ID, cell phone, clothes, even her high school certificate. Literally everything she would need if she needed to run away from loan sharks or if she needed to escape from the country to start a new life.
“Hmm, someone is bringing it over,” Adrian responded calmly.
“Really? That fast?” Helena was surprised. She hadn't even told him about the backpack and he already got someone to retrieve it for her? How did he even know she had one? He must have done his research on her yesterday.
“Thank you,”
Adrian only nodded to her thanks.
After breakfast, Helena washed the dishes. Adrian hadn't allowed her to do that yesterday but made sure to insist. That was the least she could do.
While she was doing the dishes, Adrian excused himself out of the kitchen.
Since she couldn't leave yet, and she had nothing better to do after washing the dishes, Helena decided she would tour the house.
She had only seen a glimpse of the living room yesterday night, so she decided she would just start her tour from there.
When Helena stepped into the living room, she was greeted by the cold air of the air conditioner.
The living room was a reflection of who Adrian was. Cold, empty, simple.
Except for the flower pots next to the Television, the living room was very plain. It was dusty too, it was obvious Adrian rarely used it.
The flowers drew Helena's attention. They weren't common everyday flowers, but they looked quite familiar. They were quite a contrast to the monochromatic living room.
Helena studied the flowers, they looked quite exotic. She wasn't surprised at all. Adrian Vale was rich and powerful, he could get anything if he wanted to.
But these flowers really looked familiar, so Helena racked her brain trying to remember where she had seen them.
She didn't have a photographic memory, but she would consider herself to be a very smart and intelligent person. If she hadn't dropped out of school to care for her sick mother, she would almost be done with medical school by now. She had even forfeited her scholarship all for the sake of her dying mother.
That was something she still quite regretted till now.
“What are you doing?”
Adrian's voice pulled her out of her thoughts.
“Where did you get these flowers?” Helena couldn't suppress her curiosity.
She turned to Adrian who was now fully dressed in a suit, as if he was going to work.
Today is Saturday though, so she didn't think he would actually be going to work, fully dressed at that.
If this was a normal Saturday, she would be somewhere working her ass off. But she had decided yesterday to take the day off since she would be getting paid a lot from yesterday's gig.
Unfortunately, not only would she not be getting paid for yesterday's work, she might need to spend the rest of the weekend hungry before getting back to being a waitress on Monday.
For now though, she was more concerned about the flowers.
“Where'd you get them?” She asked again.
“It was a gift,” Adrian replied curtly.
“Oh, do you know what it's called?” Helena persisted.
“No,” Adrian replied sharply.
Even though it seemed he didn't like the way she was prying into his life, she could also tell he wasn't lying.
Well, this explains why he had flowers in his home. Anyone could tell he wasn't a flower person.
Before Helena could pry further, someone walked in.
A young man, probably in his thirties, fully dressed in a suit, carrying Helena's backpack and a black folder.
“Sir, the results are out.” He handed the folder to Adrian before turning to Helena.
“Miss Hart, your bag.”
Helena rushed to collect it. She quickly opened it to confirm if everything was intact.
“Helena,” Adrian called in his usual cold voice.
Helena looked up at him in surprise. This was the first time he called her name.
“Take a look at this,” he handed over the folder to her.
Confused but curious, Helena collected it from him. “What's this?”
“The test results from the lab. The wine was indeed poisoned.”
Helena faintly glanced at the test results before returning it back to Adrian with a proud look.
“Do you believe me now?”
“Mhm,” Adrian responded before asking, “What reward do you want?”
This time, Helena knew she had to take someone from him if she didn't want to go hungry during the weekend. Besides, this might be the last time she saw him. Rich people aren't always generous anyway.
“I didn't get paid for yesterday's work, and I need the money, badly.” Helena stated.
“Is that all?”
“No.” Helena knew she might never get this type of opportunity again, so she did not plan on wasting it. “First, pay me for yesterday's job. Secondly, you have to promise me that if I'm in any kind of danger whatsoever, I can come to you.”
“Deal,” Adrian responded even without a second thought.
Wow, Helena definitely didn't expect Adrian to easily agree to the second one.
Adrian nodded at the man who pulled out a chunk of cash from his pocket.
“Please accept Mr Vale's gratitude.” He handed it to her.
Helena glanced at the money in shock, before turning to Adrian.
“This is a lot.”
“Take it.”
Helena was not a saint, so she immediately kept the money in her bag.
“Let's go, I’ll drop you off at the nearest bus station.”
“Thank you sir,” Helena responded happily. Now she had enough money to pay her rent and even buy groceries. Even a little extra for those stupid loan sharks after her.
“This way ma'am”
Helena happily walked towards the entrance before it suddenly clicked; what she had been racking her brain to remember.
“I remember!” She impulsively screamed at both men.
Adrian threw her his usual dirty look before asking, “what?”
Helena rushed to the flower pot and pointed at it before saying. “I remember what this flower is.”
Adrian only raised a brow in confusion.
“It's a poisonous flower found in the sss. It's called The Ghost Blossom . It's a flower that rarely ever dies even if not taken care of. But it releases a poisonous gas that if constantly breathe in, could
damage your lungs and your heart within just a few weeks. Mr Vale, I'm afraid the only reason why you're still alive and well is because you don't use your living room.”
