Helena walked for a long time until her legs began to ache. She knew she couldn't stay anywhere near her neighborhood. The loan sharks had eyes everywhere, and anyone here would easily sell her out.
The only place she could think of going right now is a bar. So she quickly took a bus to a neighborhood far away from her trashy neighborhood, away from the eyes of loan sharks.
The smell of stale beer and cigarette smoke welcomed her as she walked into the bar.
Helena walked straight to the counter and took a seat on a high stool.
"What can I get you?" the bartender asked, wiping the counter with a clean rag.
"Just a cheap beer, please," Helena said, counting out a few dollars from her backpack. Except for the cash she had left to pay the loan sharks, she was almost down to nothing.
When the drink arrived, she took a small sip and kept her head down. Every few seconds, her eyes would dart around the room, scanning the faces under the neon lights. She wanted to be absolutely sure that no one from her block recognized her.
"You look way too beautiful to be drinking that cheap garbage alone," a loud voice suddenly spoke beside her.
Helena turned her head. A young man had slid onto the stool next to her. He was wearing an expensive, tailored suit, but his tie was loose, and his eyes were already glassy from alcohol. He smiled at her, and Helena’s stomach immediately turned in disgust.
"I'm fine by myself," Helena said shortly, turning her back to him and taking another sip of her drink.
Her original plan was to sip as many cheap beers as she could until she couldn't take it anymore. One of her good qualities was that she had a high tolerance for alcohol, specifically cheap beer.
The man’s smile immediately vanished. He wasn't used to being ignored, especially by someone like Helena who looked completely out of place in the bar. Clearly, she was not dressed for the night.
His breath smelled heavily of whiskey as he leaned in closer to her. Helena could tell it wasn't cheap, though.
"Hey, I'm talking to you," he scoffed, “What’s a cheap ass like you pretending for? You trying to play hard to get or what?”
Helena set her glass down on the counter angrily. She had just survived a murder and a time reset; she most definitely did not have the patience for this.
"I said no, and I don't need a favor from a man who doesn't understand basic English. Go bother someone else, will ya?"
The man’s face turned bright red with anger. "You little bi…"
He raised his hand high, bringing it down fast to strike her face. Helena flinched, bracing herself for the impact.
In reality, she had a sharp mouth, but she could not fight or defend herself. Her survival skills were probably zero, or she wouldn’t have gotten killed by Celine in her first life.
A large, pale hand shot out from nowhere and clamped around the man’s wrist. He gasped, trying to pull his arm back, but he couldn't move an inch. Looking up angrily and ready to fight, his anger instantly drained from his face when he saw who was holding him.
"A-Adrian Vale?" the man stammered, his voice suddenly shaking.
Adrian stood there, his grey eyes completely cold and deadly. He didn't look at the man; his eyes were fixed entirely on Helena.
Helena shivered in fear. She had spent the last few minutes while chugging down her cheap beer, wondering the next time she would get to enjoy the luxury that she did at Adrian’s house yesterday, but she clearly did not expect to meet him this soon.
"Hey man, listen, this doesn't concern you," the man pleaded, trying to maintain some dignity despite his wrist being crushed. "She’s just a nobody, please stay out of this matter."
Adrian tightened his grip, and the man winced in pain.
"If I ever see your face near her again, I will ruin your entire family, understood?" He spoke quietly, but his voice carried a terrifying weight. "Now get out of my sight."
Adrian released the man's wrist, pushing him back. The young man didn't say another word, but it was obvious he clearly wasn't happy with the outcome of their little misunderstanding.
Before Helena could even say thank you, Adrian grabbed her by the upper arm. His grip wasn't painful, but it was unyielding.
"s**t!" Helena gasped as he pulled her off the stool. She was most definitely in trouble tonight.
Adrian walked with long, heavy strides, dragging Helena away from the crowded counter. He led her through a heavy set of double doors, past two large security guards who immediately bowed their heads to him, and straight into a quiet, heavily carpeted corridor.
This was the private VIP area of the club. The noise of the crowded bar completely died down, replaced by an eerie, luxurious silence.
Adrian finally let go of her arm.
Helena rubbed it painfully before quickly saying, “I promise I wasn’t stalking you. I didn’t know you would be here tonight. I swear.”
As she stared at Adrian’s cold eyes, Helena remembered a famous quote. ‘Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is intentional.’
Good thing this was the second time they were meeting, minus their meeting in her first life.
“I swear,” Helena spoke up again when she realized he wasn't saying anything.
“Follow me.” Adrian finally said before walking into a secluded private lounge.
