The roulette tables in the rooms began to fill up. The cry of the croupiers, ‘Faites vos jeux, the click of the roulette balls and the numbers called out, mixed in a very strange music with the moan of the waves below. As the terrace emptied and the room filled, Fiona felt that she would like to go outside. She wished somehow to seek the open air. She could not yet begin to interest herself in ‘the tables’ of which she had heard so much. She wandered on to the now almost deserted terrace and stood for a while watching the lights gleam on the sea below, turning the ever-moving water into a kaleidoscope of lovely colours, purple, green and crimson, against the rocks.
