“I cannot bear that new man,” she told Paul casually after striving to conceal her dislike for nearly a week. “He is quite all right,” Paul said in an almost hostile manner. “Oh, I am sure he is,” Fiona answered, “it is just that I am fanciful about it. At the same time I cannot help it, I have an overwhelming abhorrence of him.” “Well, I think that is extremely silly,” Paul parried tersely. Rising to his feet he left her sitting at the table, surprised at his abrupt manner. ‘Why should he mind my disliking one of the Club servants?’ Fiona asked herself. Then, as there was no one to answer it, she left the question unsolved and rose to dance with an old man who should have been in bed hours ago.
