Chapter 20 – The Man in the Fog

Vanessa’s POV The door slammed. The sound echoed through the empty boathouse like a gunshot. Daniel’s arm instinctively moved in front of me, shielding me without even thinking about it. The gesture did something strange to my heart — something steady, something warm, even in the middle of fear. The man stepped further inside. He was well-dressed. Not like a criminal. Not desperate. Calm. That terrified me more. “You shouldn’t be here,” Daniel said coldly. The stranger chuckled softly. “On the contrary. I’m exactly where I need to be.” The bulb above us flickered again, casting shadows across his face. “I’m here to offer clarity,” he continued. “You’re fighting the wrong enemy.” My stomach tightened. “Meaning?” I asked before Daniel could stop me. His eyes moved to me — calculating. “Regina is ambitious,” he said smoothly. “But she doesn’t have the reach to orchestrate this alone.” Ice slid down my spine. So this was bigger. Daniel’s jaw hardened. “Who sent you?” The man ignored the question. “There are investors,” he said. “People who want your company’s controlling shares. The fastest way to destabilize a CEO? Attack his personal life. Create scandal. Financial irregularities. Force the board’s hand.” He smiled slightly. “You’ve played your part beautifully.” Daniel’s POV Rage burned under my skin. “You used my wife as leverage?” I demanded. He shrugged. “She was already insecure. We just… applied pressure.” My fists clenched. Vanessa stiffened beside me, but she didn’t crumble. She stood taller. “Why tell us this?” she asked calmly. That surprised me. The man tilted his head. “Because this phase is complete. The next phase begins tomorrow.” Every muscle in my body went tight. “What phase?” I asked. “The public one.” Vanessa’s POV Public. The word echoed in my mind. “Scandal,” he clarified. “The financial transfer will leak. Anonymous sources. Media speculation. Your board will panic.” He looked at Daniel. “You’ll be asked to step down pending investigation.” Daniel didn’t flinch. But I felt the tension ripple through him. “And Regina?” I asked. “She believes she’s gaining power,” the man said lightly. “In reality, she’s clearing the path.” “For who?” Daniel snapped. The man smiled again. “For acquisition.” This wasn’t sibling betrayal anymore. This was corporate war. Daniel’s POV I studied him carefully. He wasn’t nervous. He wasn’t hiding. That meant one thing. He believed he was untouchable. “Who do you work for?” I asked again. He walked closer, stopping just a few feet away. “You’ll know soon enough.” Then his gaze shifted to Vanessa. “And you,” he said softly, “are the variable.” She didn’t back down. “What does that mean?” “It means,” he said, “if you had left him, this would have been easy. A broken CEO makes desperate decisions.” He looked at both of us. “But united?” He paused. “That complicates things.” Something flickered in Daniel’s expression. Understanding. “They didn’t expect us to stay together,” he said quietly. The man’s smile faltered — just slightly. Bingo. Vanessa’s POV That tiny c***k in his confidence gave me courage. “So you came here to intimidate us?” I asked. “No,” he replied smoothly. “I came to observe.” “Observe what?” “How strong the marriage really is.” Silence filled the room. My pulse pounded, but not from fear anymore. From clarity. They underestimated us. They assumed our marriage was fragile. Manipulatable. Disposable. They were wrong. Daniel’s POV “You’ve made your point,” I said coldly. “Leave.” He checked his watch casually. “You have twelve hours before the leak goes live.” My stomach dropped. “Tick-tock,” he added lightly. Then he turned, opened the door, and disappeared into the fog. Just like that. Gone. Vanessa’s POV The silence he left behind was suffocating. Twelve hours. “That means by morning—” I began. “The board will be in emergency session,” Daniel finished. “And the media?” “Already fed a narrative.” I walked a few steps away, trying to steady my breathing. “They want you to look guilty,” I said. “They want you defensive.” He nodded slowly. “And alone.” I turned to face him. “You’re not alone.” The words came out stronger than I expected. Something shifted in his eyes. Not passion. Not tension. Trust. Raw. Real. Rebuilding. Daniel’s POV She could have walked away. She almost did. And now? She was standing beside me. Fighting. “We need proof,” she said, thinking out loud. “Proof the transfer wasn’t authorized by you.” “I’ll call IT,” I replied. “Have them trace the digital authentication.” “And the recording?” “We keep it secure.” She stepped closer. “We expose them before they expose you.” A slow realization dawned on me. Vanessa wasn’t reacting emotionally anymore. She was strategic. Sharp. Dangerous in her own way. I almost smiled. “They thought you were my weakness,” I said quietly. “And?” she challenged. “They were wrong.” Vanessa’s POV My phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn’t an unknown number. It was Bianca. I hesitated. Then answered. “Vanessa,” she whispered urgently, “you need to see this.” My heart thudded. “See what?” “It’s already starting.” She sent a link. I opened it. Headline: CEO Under Investigation for Financial Misconduct — Marriage in Turmoil My breath caught. The article included the photos. The ones meant to break us. Narrative constructed perfectly. A distracted husband. A fractured marriage. A suspicious transaction. Public opinion was already forming. Daniel read over my shoulder. His face went still. Not panicked. Focused. “They moved earlier than promised,” he murmured. Which meant one thing. The man wasn’t in full control. Someone above him was. Daniel’s POV My phone began ringing. Board member. Another. And another. I silenced them all. “Don’t answer yet,” Vanessa said. I looked at her. “Let them panic,” she continued. “We respond prepared, not pressured.” God. When did she become this strong? Or had she always been? And I had been too blind — too proud — to see it? “We go home,” she said firmly. “We gather everything. We fight this properly.” Home. For the first time in days, that word didn’t feel fragile. It felt like a fortress. Vanessa’s POV As we stepped out of the boathouse together, the fog wrapped around us thick and cold. But Daniel’s hand found mine. Not tentative. Not hesitant. Intentional. “They tried to break us,” he said quietly. I squeezed his hand. “They should have tried harder.” For the first time since this nightmare began, I wasn’t afraid of losing him. I was afraid for whoever thought they could take us down. Because they had just made one fatal mistake. They forced us onto the same side. Daniel’s POV As we reached the car, headlights flashed in the distance. Another vehicle parked down the road. Watching. I narrowed my eyes. “They’re monitoring us,” I said. Vanessa didn’t panic. “Good,” she replied. I glanced at her. “Let them watch.” There was fire in her now. Not jealousy. Not insecurity. Resolve. We got into the car. As I started the engine, my phone buzzed one last time. Unknown number. One text. You have no idea how deep this goes. I showed Vanessa. She stared at the message, then slowly looked up at me. “Then we dig deeper.” And as we drove into the night — Together — I realized something. This wasn’t just about saving my company. Or repairing a marriage. This was war. And whoever started it? They were about to learn something dangerous. Vanessa and I were strongest when we fought side by side.
