Chapter 18 – Midnight Truths

1214 Words
Vanessa’s POV Midnight. The old boathouse stood at the edge of the river like a forgotten secret. Paint peeling. Windows cracked. The fog wrapped around it like something alive. I should have turned back. Every instinct warned me this was reckless. But doubt is louder than fear when your marriage is on the line. My heels crunched against gravel as I stepped closer. The river lapped softly against the dock, an eerie rhythm in the silence. “Hello?” My voice sounded small. No answer. My phone buzzed. Inside. My heart pounded so hard it hurt. I pushed the door open slowly. It creaked, the sound sharp in the quiet. The interior was dim, lit only by a single hanging bulb. And someone was standing there. Bianca. Of course. She looked calm. Too calm. “You came,” she said smoothly. “What do you want?” My voice was steady, even if my pulse wasn’t. “To help you,” she replied. I almost laughed. “By sending photos? Anonymous messages? That’s your version of help?” She tilted her head. “You deserve to know who your husband really is.” My jaw tightened. “Say it clearly.” She stepped closer. “Daniel isn’t as loyal as you think.” The words hit—but not as hard as I expected. Because tonight, something felt… off. “Then show me proof,” I said. She smiled faintly. “I already did.” “That photo proves nothing.” Her smile faltered—just slightly. Interesting. Before she could respond, the door slammed open behind me. “Vanessa!” Daniel’s voice tore through the space. I turned. He stood there, chest rising hard, eyes blazing—not with guilt. With fury. He wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at Bianca. Daniel’s POV I knew something was wrong the second Ryan told me Vanessa left Riverside Park alone. Then her location pinged near the old docks. And I understood. Regina. Bianca. Someone was escalating this. When I reached the boathouse and saw Bianca inside with Vanessa, something inside me snapped. “What are you doing here?” I demanded. Bianca didn’t flinch. “I’m clarifying things.” “By manipulating my wife?” Vanessa’s eyes moved between us, searching. “Daniel,” she said quietly, “what is this?” I stepped closer—but not toward Bianca. Toward Vanessa. “She’s been setting this up,” I said. “The photos. The timing. Everything.” Bianca laughed softly. “You give me too much credit.” “Do I?” I shot back. “Or are you upset I never gave you what you wanted?” Silence. Vanessa stiffened. Bianca’s composure cracked for half a second. “What is he talking about?” Vanessa asked. Bianca recovered quickly. “He’s deflecting.” “No,” I said firmly. “You crossed boundaries. I shut them down. And when that didn’t work, you tried to create doubt.” Vanessa’s breathing quickened. “Is that true?” she asked Bianca. Bianca’s eyes hardened. “You really believe him?” “That’s not an answer,” Vanessa said. For the first time since this nightmare began, I saw something shift in my wife. Not fear. Not jealousy. Strength. Vanessa’s POV I looked at Bianca carefully. No smirk now. No sweet tone. Just irritation. “You sent the messages,” I said slowly. She didn’t deny it. “I gave you information,” she corrected. “You gave me angles,” I snapped. “Angles designed to look intimate.” Daniel’s voice softened behind me. “Vanessa, I told you.” I swallowed. Part of me wanted to collapse from relief. But another part wasn’t done. “Why?” I asked Bianca. Her eyes flickered. Then the truth slipped out. “Because he chose you.” The air shifted. “What?” I whispered. She laughed bitterly. “You think you’re the only one who sees him? The only one who admires him? I worked beside him for two years. Two. And he never once crossed a line.” Daniel’s jaw tightened. “But you wanted him to,” I said quietly. Her silence confirmed everything. “You couldn’t have him,” I continued, “so you tried to make sure I wouldn’t either.” Her expression turned cold. “You’re naïve if you think doubt won’t come back.” “Not from you,” Daniel said sharply. And then he did something I wasn’t expecting. He pulled out his phone. “In fact,” he added, “HR already received your termination request.” Bianca’s face drained of color. “You wouldn’t.” “I would,” he said calmly. “And I did. Effective immediately.” The silence was deafening. She stared at him. Then at me. “You think this saves you?” she whispered to me. “Trust doesn’t repair overnight.” And with that— She walked out. Daniel’s POV The door shut behind her. And suddenly it was just us. The fog outside thickened. The bulb above flickered. Vanessa didn’t look at me immediately. She was processing. And I didn’t blame her. “I should have handled it sooner,” I said quietly. “I saw the attention. I ignored it because I thought it was harmless. That was my mistake.” She finally looked at me. “And Regina?” My jaw tightened. “She wanted to prove you weren’t strong enough for my world.” “And you?” “I never doubted you,” I said firmly. Silence stretched between us. Fragile. Heavy. “Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked softly. “About Bianca crossing lines?” “Because I thought shutting it down was enough,” I admitted. “I didn’t want to create drama where there wasn’t any.” “There was,” she whispered. “I felt it.” And that hit me harder than anything else. Because she had felt alone. Even before the photos. Vanessa’s POV The truth settled slowly. Bianca had manipulated angles. Regina had fueled doubt. But Daniel— Daniel had been careless. Not unfaithful. But careless with my security. “I need honesty,” I said quietly. “Even about small things.” “You’ll have it,” he replied immediately. “And I need to feel chosen,” I added. He stepped closer. “You are,” he said. No hesitation. No pause. And this time… I believed him. Not fully. Not completely. But enough to breathe again. He reached for my hand. I didn’t pull away. The fog wrapped around us as if sealing the moment. But just as relief began to settle— My phone buzzed again. Unknown number. My stomach dropped. Daniel saw it too. I opened the message. It wasn’t Bianca. It wasn’t Regina. It was a single line. “You think this was the only secret?” Attached was a document. A financial report. Daniel’s company. And a highlighted line showing— A massive unauthorized transfer. Signed under Daniel’s name. I looked up slowly. His face had gone pale. “I didn’t do that,” he whispered. And just like that— The storm wasn’t over. It was only beginning.
