Vanessa’s POV
I didn’t want to think. Didn’t want to feel.
I walked the streets until the city’s lights blurred into one endless line of gold and silver. My fingers were numb from the rain, my coat heavy and soaked, but I didn’t care. I only cared about one thing: making sense of the chaos that had become my life.
The photos. Regina’s smirk. Daniel’s desperate words. Each memory collided with the last, leaving me spinning. I couldn’t trust him. Not tonight. Not yet.
I ducked into a small café I’d never noticed before, seeking solitude. The warmth hit me like a small wave of relief, but inside, my storm raged on.
Chloe had left a note: “Think carefully. Don’t let fear make the choice for you.”
Fear. Yes. That was exactly what it was.
I took a deep breath and tried to steady my trembling hands. I needed clarity. I needed… proof.
Then my phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.
“You deserve the truth. Meet me tonight. 10 PM. Riverside Park.”
I froze.
Riverside Park. Alone. At night.
Was this another trap? Another manipulation from Regina? Or… could it finally be the truth?
My pulse raced. Every instinct screamed danger. Every part of me wanted to go.
And somehow, despite the fear, I knew I would.
Daniel’s POV
I couldn’t focus on work. Couldn’t eat. Couldn’t even breathe properly. Vanessa’s absence gnawed at me like a physical wound.
Regina’s interference had reached a point I couldn’t ignore. Every plan she made, every subtle comment, every “accidental” glance was designed to destroy me. To destroy us.
I called Ryan, needing eyes on Vanessa. “Find her. Anywhere she might go tonight. Please.”
Ryan hesitated. “I’ll try, but she’s not telling anyone her plans.”
Of course she wasn’t. She would rather wander the city alone, consumed by doubt, than lean on me.
I cursed, running my hands through my hair. My phone buzzed. Another message from her. Short. Cold.
I need time.
Time. Time was the enemy. Every second she spent away, the seed of doubt grew stronger. And I knew that if I didn’t act fast, the fracture would become permanent.
I grabbed my coat. “I’m finding her,” I muttered to myself. “No excuses. No delays. She needs to hear me. And she needs to know the truth.”
Vanessa’s POV
The park was quiet. Fog rolled off the river, curling around the lampposts like fingers. The shadows seemed alive, whispering warnings I couldn’t ignore.
I scanned the benches. The paths. The riverbank. Alone.
A figure stepped from the mist. Tall. Broad. Familiar.
“Vanessa,” Daniel’s voice called softly.
I froze. My chest tightened. Every part of me screamed to turn and run. But I didn’t. I wanted answers.
“You shouldn’t be here,” I whispered.
“I couldn’t stay home,” he replied, eyes searching mine. “Not while you’re out here, thinking I betrayed you.”
“Why should I trust you?” I asked. “After everything?”
“I’ll prove it,” he said, voice steady. “But you have to let me. Just… listen.”
I wanted to believe him. I wanted to collapse into his arms and never let go. But doubt had a grip that love couldn’t reach tonight.
“Then start talking,” I said finally.
Daniel’s POV
I took a cautious step closer, keeping a safe distance. “The photo… it was taken at a company event. Bianca leaned in to show me a file. Regina positioned herself… she took the picture to make it look like something it wasn’t.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed. “You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes,” I said, urgency cracking my voice. “Because it’s the truth. Bianca doesn’t care about me that way. Regina… she’s trying to break us apart. She wants me to fail. And if you walk away… she wins.”
I watched her chest rise and fall, saw her eyes glisten in the lamplight. Every second she didn’t answer felt like a lifetime.
“I want to trust you,” she whispered finally. “I really do… but I can’t.”
The words hit me like a punch to the gut. Not rejection. Not exactly. But doubt. That invisible poison between us.
“I’ll wait,” I said, desperate. “As long as it takes. Just don’t let fear make your choice.”
Vanessa’s POV
I wanted to scream. Wanted to cry. Wanted to throw myself into his arms and never let go.
Instead, I turned away. “I can’t tonight. I need to be sure. Alone.”
He didn’t follow. Didn’t beg. Didn’t argue. And maybe that hurt more than any betrayal ever could.
I walked along the riverbank, each step heavier than the last. The fog thickened. The night pressed in.
Then my phone buzzed again. Another message from the unknown number.
“If you want the truth, come closer to the old boathouse. Midnight.”
My breath caught. The boathouse. Alone. At midnight.
Every instinct screamed danger. But my heart… my heart wanted answers.
And I knew I would go.
Daniel’s POV
I watched her disappear into the mist, fear and helplessness twisting inside me.
Every step she took away from me felt like a fracture in my chest. Every second she trusted someone else over me… I couldn’t breathe.
I wanted to follow, to hold her, to force her to see the truth. But I knew if I did, she might push me away.
I clenched my fists, rain dripping from my hair.
Just one chance. That’s all I need.
And I would find a way to make her see the truth. Even if it destroyed me.
