Its Saturday, a week after Rodney's and Glenda's break up and both of them have been making out with different people everyday just to get back at the other. I wonder why I have such childish friends. I hate it every time I have to be the voice of reason between them. Shouldn't they figure this out by themselves, it's their relationship after all, what does this have to do with me?
On the upside I have been placed as this year's hockey captain. How exciting and definitely I'm the youngest ever. I'm so proud of myself. On the down side the team I have to deal with, is worse than wearing sweat pants to an interview. This year's team has some of the most opposing people in this school and guess what; Theo is part of that team. I know it's usually referred to as a blessing in disguise but this was definitely a curse in disguise I think.
There is going to be a Social function today at the school hall and everyone is pretty hyped about it except me. I hated these functions, what was their purpose anyway? I definitely could not dance and so if I attended I would be just sitting or standing in a corner like some dumb jackass. I couldn't even approach the girls, it was considered the hardest thing to do as girls made fun of you if you didn't meet their standards. I generally wisped my time reading or something, I was such a nerd.
This function has seriously got the boys' hostel in a mess. People are taking out clothes you have never seen before; shoes that we thought were not on the premises as casual wear was forbidden. But because it was a function you could dress up to your hearts content. How did people even get all this stuff through the gate? I'm stunned.
As I sit on my bed and watch people can ready, Jack calls out to me and says "Dude dress up. You know I cannot go without my wingman". Quite ironic coming from him, as my best friend he knew I never attended this stuff.
"Jack, you know I don't attend this stuff" I say holding my chin over a bent elbow on a table.
"Come on, just today. You might meet someone" waving a pair of Nikes in my direction "And I have got these killer kicks, just your size".
I sigh and take the shoes from his hand. "Just for today only" I say.
Jack was short, buff with some muscles, he kinda looked like a younger version of Kevin Hart and he was quite good looking. He liked the girls a lot and the girls did like him too. But he was a bit on the shy side and therefore could never make a move on any of the girls. I think that is what brought us together as friends; that lack of confidence when it came to girls although my indecisiveness was a bit dense compared to his.
"You are definitely not wearing that jacket today" Nick shouts at Peter.
"And why not, it is mine remember?" Peter says whilst admiring himself in the mirror.
"Are you dumb? I wore it at the last function; girls will think that we are sharing clothes" Peter says over a high voice.
"Ha ha ha, I told you not to give him last week. Now you will look like that poor kid every one dumps their old clothes to". Martin taunts Peter. "Definitely girls are totally going to avoid you." He walks out of the room laughing.
Peter throws the jacket at Nick and says "You are buying me a new jacket", definitely looking infuriated.
The bell rings for everyone to leave the hostel. No one was allowed to stay behind. You would either go to the study hall to read or to the function but because of the loud music coming from the function, little reading would be done. I go to Yayen's room to pick him up.
I find Theo sitting on his bed. He lifts up his head, sees me and says "Ooh hie Timothy, looking for Yayen?" I just nod.
"He went to iron my shirt, he will be back in a second" why would Yayen iron his shirt? Is he disabled? He is using him. Why does Yayen play with both of us he got to pick a side? You can't seriously love both Thanos and The Avengers, that is not how it works.
I acknowledge his response with a slight sneer and walk out of the room, only to bump into Yayen holding two ironed shirts.
"Why are you doing his dirty work? You work for him now?" I say looking disgusted.
"I don't know what's the problem between you two but you need to fix it, you can't live like this" Yayen says, chilled.
"It's not my problem that he hates me" I say looking aside.
Yayen had a big body, he was twice or thrice my size by comparison. Frightening, yes he looked but he was one of the gentlest guys I have ever known. He was quite soft hearted; he seemed like some giant teddy bear, one you would want to tell all your secrets.
He shrugs "let me give him his shirt, wait for me outside". He trots off into his room and I head outside to where Jack was and wait for him. We could hear the music from a distant and it sounded like Sia's Cheap Thrills was playing. It seemed this afternoon was not going to be bad after all.
Yayen arrives and his pet Theo right behind him. We make our way straight for the hall passing by the senior hostel were non-prefect upper sixes and lower sixes stayed. This was a totally no go area, if you wanted to keep your head. As we get closer, the music got louder in sync with the girl's screams. The screams only got louder when Edsheeran's Shape of you came on.
We arrive at the door, get our tickets and jump straight into the hall. As expected there was this clear line between boys and girls, a whole 6 metres was left. Only a few brave souls were at the girls' side, this included those dating and those trying their luck.
The Gucci Gang following their leaders Brian and Rodney, went to the stage and announced that there will be a modelling contest before the floor can be released for dancing. What a shock, Kimberly was going to model. I can't believe I almost missed this. The winner was to be decided by the amount of cheer they got from the crowd; the louder, the better their chances. But we all knew with this gang in charge it was rigged from the start.
The Gucci Gang never ceased to amaze. Today they were dressed in rainbow coloured shirts branded with their group name and not to forget the knee length white socks complimented by Converse All stars' on their feet. Definitely trying to bring the South African pantsula dressing back in style.
I notice Chido, and go to her directly. She was one of those girl's you always took to be one of the boys. She was my oldest friend, after Glenda of course. Dressed in the schools' track bottom and her house colour t-shirt; her dressing was effortless. She clearly never made any effort to buffer her looks what so ever for this occasion.
"Did you notice how great Marshal looks in those ripped jeans" Chido says clearing blushing, as her white cheeks had turned pink. Marshal was Chido's long time crush, she clearly loved him to bits but he never seemed to notice her. I probably think it was the way she always kept her hair short like she had some boy's cut or something but that is just me thinking. Marshal was a stream ahead of us.
"Yup very nice" I say trying to make conservation.
"You know you should probably go say hie" she looks at me and says "You think, what if he doesn't like me?"
"Then, that is his own loss"
"Nice words Tim but I'm just not ready to lose him just yet" I hit my fore head with the palm of my head and say "You are going to die alone, if you are not careful"
She bursts into feats of laughter and says "It's quite funny coming from you; everyone knows how you are head over heels Kimberly but basically never do anything."
Our patty exchange is cut short when the first model comes on stage. She looked nice but needed a better hairstyle in my opinion. A barrage of other models come on, get cheers from the crowd whilst Edsheeran's Thinking Out Loud was on repeat. I swear my heart stopped beating, the minute Kimberly stepped on to the stage with her red polka dot dress. She looked so beautiful I shouted at the top of my lungs; she has got to win.
After all the models had gone, Brian came to get shout-outs for each model individually and Kimberly got the most cheers by far. As I suspected the crown was given to Lindsay, the Gucci Gang's latest exploit, who was being passed down around the group like some piece of meat. I wonder why girls are so short sighted. I was totally bumped.
After that announcement I didn't wait for the free dancing I simply left the hall and sat on one of the stone benches facing the glass windows of the hall. I could clearly see what was happening inside. In the midst of people socializing and dancing, I could see Theo trying to dance, it seemed like he had ants in his pants. The upper sixes and lower sixes seemed to be on point as they had formed a circle and people were taking turns to dance in the middle. It clearly seemed to be so much fun as there were laughing and some holding hands.
I turn around and look at the science labs behind me. I peek over the high windows and notice Nick, Jack, Peter and Ryan with controllers in their hands. These guys were playing Fifa. I can't believe Jack had dragged me all the way to this function, so that he can play Fifa with his soccer mates. I immediately go around the lab and into the room there are occupying.
"I thought I was supposed to be your wingman on some mission to get a girl" I say giving Jack a stern eye.
"Well, the girls didn't seem quite up to it today, will try again some other time." Yes of course he had chickened out as always. He suddenly springs up and shouts "Thank you Ronaldo" it seemed he had scored. He was playing against Ryan who was using Manchester United and all he was saying is "Glory Man United". I always wondered what this meant.
I move towards the other end of the room and sit on a stool.
"Do you wanna play? We can add you to the tournament." Peter says pointing the controllers towards me.
"I'm not really a soccer fan, I think I will pass" I say looking outside the window.
"Aaaaah, you don't like soccer? Too bad, I certainly feel sorry for you." Ryan says and the whole group laughs in monotone.
This spell of happiness was cut short as the vice-principal Mr Daniels walked in. It seems we will be visiting his office on Monday for a date with his favorite rubber whip commonly known as Mr Buster. How did I get myself in this mess? I wonder.
After our encounter with Mr Daniels, the function generally ended for all of us. It was dinner time and I was sitting on my table directly across Lindsay. I periodically looked at her with so much scorn.
"Do you have anything to say to me?" she says looking at me, really nerved.
"I just think you were not the best contestant in that contest" I say and immediately look at Kimberly, who is sitting diagonally across me.
"Just because you like her, it doesn't mean everyone else does. I clearly won that contest. So deal with it." She says in anger.
"Guys please don't fight, the contest is over. It is what it is Tim. Just let it go." Kimberly says in a lowly voice. The sadness is her eyes definitely betraying her.
We eventually just drop the matter all together.
It's Sunday and everyone goes to church introspect of whether you are Christian or not, they just didn't care. The Gucci Gang and a couple of other guys were bunking as expected. Jack and my fellow room mates were staying behind to play Fifa and therefore I was going with my buddy Yayen. We always went to church a little earlier so that we could get enough time to talk about what has been bugging us the whole week and advice each other on what to do. I obviously told him about the Glenda break up and how I hated Lindsay winning the pageant. He didn't have much to say except little detail on how he made out with this girl called Diana.
We got to the church and Jolene was capsizing the congress with her beautiful voice. I have to admit she was a great singer; her singing was similar to that of Jennifer Hudson. She sang a couple of songs and later introduced the invite pastor. Everything went well except a few instances when some upper and lower sixes left midst the mass.
