Chapter Two

“I’m so sorry that I’m late,” Gavin said, rushing through the door and over to our table. “We had to stay over for a mandatory meeting after set today.”            He took a seat to my right, giving me a sideways glance. Since I was bringing in a lot of money to help support us right now, Gavin wasn’t my biggest fan. At first, we hit it off. I’d like to think that we would still be really good friends if it weren’t for the fact that I was practically a freeloader right now.            “Eve, what are you doing here? I thought you had a job to work tonight?” Gavin asked. His tone told me that he wasn’t too happy to see me here.            “Yeah, well, it didn’t pan out exactly. Don’t worry. I’ll find a way to come up with some money by the end of the month.”            Thank god that Joel left because I didn’t want him to hear any of this conversation. It would only give him another excuse to ask me out again. No doubt he would probably start by being a gentleman and offering to help me out and that I could pay him back. Yeah, no thanks. I wasn’t a total freeloader. I was the only one that ever cleaned the house since Gavin was hardly ever there except to sleep or f**k. Cleaning and cooking were the only two contributions that I could make since I haven’t been lucky enough to sell any art lately.            Mia kicked Gavin under the table, hoping that I wouldn’t notice, I guess. “Gavin, give it a rest. Tonight is about hanging out as friends. You two can discuss your living arrangements privately.”            Gavin’s lip raised but lowered when his eyes landed back on me. “Yeah, sure thing. Congrats on the little bun in the oven, by the way!”            “Thank you for like the hundredth time,” Mia responded, giggling as Cole tickled her.            I swear if I had to sit in this circle and watch their cute display of affection any longer, I was going to vomit. Honestly, I don’t get it. Mia has told me about all the hot s*x they have and how controlling Cole is, especially in the bedroom. Where was that guy at right now? It didn’t make any sense. That is exactly what I didn’t want. I know it sounds absurd, and maybe I am a little crazy, but I wanted a guy to dominate me not just in the bedroom but even when we were out and about too. Forget all that sweet romantic s**t. No, I wanted my guy to walk up to me, pull my hair, bend me over, and smack my ass in front of other guys just to show them that I was off-limits. That lovely Dovey s**t didn’t work for me.            Mia laughed, snapping her fingers in my face. “Are you in fantasy land over there, Eve? I was asking if you wanted to go wedding dress shopping with me this weekend?”            “Uh, sure.” I only agreed to get her off my back because, knowing Mia, she wouldn’t stop asking until I caved anyway.            I didn’t have any actual plans this weekend, but I did want to go off on my own to do my own thing this weekend. It has been a while since I’ve been to a bar by myself. Mia wouldn’t be able to go because she couldn’t drink with me. Well, she could go, but she wouldn’t be able to drink, which would defeat the purpose of going altogether.            While all the guys got up to shoot some pool, Gavin, Mia, and I stayed at the table watching them from afar. If I really wanted to, I could get up there and kick all their asses. There is a thought. Instead of sitting at this boring-ass table listening to Gavin b***h about how I never paid him anything, I could hustle some idiots on the pool table. It wasn’t a bad idea. In fact, it might have been my most fabulous idea in a while.            When I walked over to the table, all the guys stopped to stare at me like I didn’t belong. Soren stepped closer, holding onto his stick. “Sorry, Eve, but this is a big boy’s game.”             They all laughed at my expense, but I only smiled. They had no idea that I’ve played pool ever since I was five, and I almost went pro once or twice. “Then you wouldn’t mind playing me for money then, would you?”             “What money?” Soren chuckled. “According to Gavin, your broke little girl.”             That was the worst possible thing anyone could call me, ever! I walked close up to him, fisting his shirt. “Call me, little girl, one more time, and I’ll show you just how wrong you are. If you are too chicken s**t to play me, then just say so.”             Soren suddenly slapped his hand in the middle of the pool table, a twenty-dollar bill sticking out from underneath his palm. “You are on, but don’t say that I didn’t warn you.”             I had an emergency stash that I kept tucked away in my bra for safekeeping. I literally only had a twenty, but I knew I could easily double my money. I hadn’t watched Soren play, and I didn’t need to because I knew that I was better. He didn’t know that, but he soon would. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------             There was no way in hell that I was going to stick around after seeing how unaffected Eve was by me making out with that random girl. Then, after I left, I had the poor girl following behind me, asking if she was coming home with me. Since Eve wasn’t around, I didn’t have to be fake me, so I told her to f**k off, which made her cry.             I should feel like an asshole for treating that random girl like such s**t, but I didn’t. I was more concerned with whether to go back inside and make Eve listen to me. All I needed to do was stop being this guy that I thought she wanted me to be. Apparently, it wasn’t working. The only reason I decided to try something different with her was from my experience with Mia. Sure, I f****d up big time on that one. Honestly, I wanted what Cole had and still do. Not Mia, but the relationship he has with her. I’ve never seen him as happy as he is right now. Who didn’t want that?             When I went after Mia, I was completely myself. I was an asshole and had been forceful. I convinced myself that she might have seen me differently if I had done things differently and been a nicer guy. That is exactly why I decided to change up my tactic on Eve. Yes, I know that not all women are the same, but most women wanted that romantic s**t they saw on television all the time. Maybe with enough patience, I could be that guy too.             I was across the road getting a drink when my phone buzzed in my pocket. “Yeah,” I answered.             “Dude, get your ass back over here. Eve is running this f*****g pool table. You got to get in on this, man,” Cole nearly screamed in my ear.             Immediately hanging up the phone, I rushed back across the street to see a crowd of guys gathered around the pool tables. She was finishing up a game with some random guy who swung his arm over her shoulder. It took nearly every bit of strength I had not to go over there and grab that guy by his throat and toss him the f**k out of here. I had to remind myself that I wasn’t Eve’s boyfriend or anything. I had no claim over her, meaning she could see any guy she wanted. That didn’t mean that I didn’t want to strangle them for touching her.             I came up from behind her so she couldn’t see me and slapped three hundred on the table. “Think you can take me on?”             Eve spun around with his beautiful smile on her face that made me weak in the knees. She was so damn gorgeous and only got more beautiful every time I looked at her. “Three-hundred-dollars? Are you sure? I’ve beaten everyone here tonight.”             “Oh, I’m sure, but this money is my entry regardless if I win or lose. If I win, I don’t want the money, but something else. If I lose, you keep the money, of course.”             She smirked, stepping closer to me, close enough that I could feel her breath on my lips. “Let me guess. You want a date if you win. Your willing to risk losing three-hundred dollars for the sake of getting me to go out on a date with you?”             “Yup. Now, are we going to play or sit here and talk about playing all night?”             Eve turned around to chalk her hands as I cued up the balls. When I had them in order, Eve took her place on the other side of the table to break. She leaned over the table, purposely showing me the tops of her breasts. If she thought that this would distract me, she was wrong. I was a man of many talents, and I could f**k her while playing pool at the same time so enjoying the view while playing was just an early reward for me.             She took her shot, sinking in two solids in the corner pockets. “Nice,” I credited her before walking around the pool table to give her room to take her next shot. As long as she didn't run the table on me right now, I would be fine. Once it was my go, she wouldn’t have another shot. That’s how good I was.             “Thanks, but if you thought that was impressive, watch this.”             Eve lined up another shot, sinking three more balls in one after another. Just as she was about to take her next shot, I lifted my shirt to wipe the sweat off my forehead, noticing that she was watching me. That was my opening as she took her shot and missed.             “Damn,” she said, shaking her head.             I chuckled, licking my bottom lip. “Now that you showed me how impressive you are, it’s time to show you my skills. I’ll give it to you, you are good, but the second you let yourself get distracted by anything is when you lose.”             Maybe I should have been a gentleman and let her win because it would be the right thing to do, but I wanted my reward. It might be my only chance with her, and I would damn sure take it. It didn’t take me but a few minutes, and I had sunk all my stripped balls into pockets, leaving only the eight-ball left. After calling the right corner pocket, I landed it perfectly in as Eve tried distracting me with her breasts again, but I had my eyes on that date.             “s**t,” she muttered under her breath. “There goes my winning streak.”             “Sorry,” I responded, walking over to her to place my pool stick up against the wall with the others. “Like I said, your good. I haven’t met anyone else that comes close to my level when it comes to pool. Have you ever thought about playing for a team?”             “No,” was all she said.             Clearly, she wasn’t as happy about me winning as much as I was. I placed my hand on her waist with my chest tugged snuggly against her back. As I leaned into her ear, I whispered, “I’m looking forward to that date.” I blew out my breathe on purpose, making her body shake in response. Good to know that her body thought differently of me than she did. You can deny the mind, but you can never deny what the body wants.
