Chapter 30

VIXEN "What the actual f**k man?" The Gamma's voice is raspy, like he's been smoking for decades. "What are you doing here, Wilder?" Maddox's irritation is palpable. "No, I asked you a question first," Wilder demands. The Alpha marches forward, fists clenched. "I am your Alpha, and you will treat me as such," his voice is a deep growl and he plants himself between me and the other male. "Come the f**k on, man. We're best friends. She tried to f*****g kill me. Why is she here?" the red head ignores the Alpha’s warning. "It's not your concern. Leave. Now. I don't want you in the house right now," Maddox's aura becomes over bearing with authority. "f**k you! You're gunna choose this w***e over me?" "f**k YOU!" I whip around in my chair to glare at the smaller male. A loud snarl assaults my ears, the force of it demanding submission. I'm able to resist, though Wilder isn't so lucky, brought to his knees with the Alpha looming over him. "Wilder, I will no longer tolerate your insubordination. You will show me respect as your Alpha. Do I make myself f*****g clear?" the deep baritone voice sends shivers down my spine. "Yes, Alpha," the Gamma says weakly. "Good. Now leave. Stay out of the house until I say you can return," the smaller male responds to the command immediately, standing up and turning to leave. "b***h," he mutters under his breath as he glares at me over his shoulder. The Alpha's hand is around his neck in the blink of an eye, a snarl shakes the windows. "What was that?" his voice is low and threatening. "Nothing, Alpha," Wilder rasps out. "You really want to add lying to your list of bullshit?" Maddox raises a brow. "f*****g hell... I'm sorry alright?" The Alpha drags him out of the room, limbs kicking and flailing in protest. He stops and turns to me before closing the door. "I'll be right back," and the door closes. I listen to their steps disappear down the hall, the Alpha’s thudding loudly against the hard wood floor in his rage. A few minutes pass before I hear yelling and screaming. There’s a loud bang and the sound of glass shattering. A growl thunders through the house, so powerful the walls vibrate and shakes the hanging photos decorating them. A door slams, knocking a couple pictures frames off the wall, and then a single set of footsteps approaches the office. "I'm sorry about that. I didn’t realize he was discharged from the infirmary,” the Alpha apologizes sincerely, though his shoulders are still tense with anger and a fire burns in his eyes. “S’fine,” I mumble, “Been called worse,” I shrug, trying to make light of the situation, but Maddox is giving me an intense look. “Is that suppose to make it okay?” He asks softly. The question catches me off guard. “Doesn’t really matter either way.” “Of course it matters. You deserve kindness and respect,” I look at him quizzically, “you understand that right?” “Why? I didn’t do anything to earn it,” I say confused. His eyes widen in shock. “You don’t actually believe that’s how it works, right?” “It’s how it’s always been for me,” I shrug, unsure what the big deal is. The Alpha sighs. “I’m sorry if that’s what you’ve been trained to believe, but it not how it’s supposed to be,” he steps closer, his face soft. I feel small with him standing over me, his height made more apparent from where I sit in the chair. This moment is starting to feel too personal and vulnerable. It makes me uncomfortable. “Can we talk about something else?” I ask quietly. The Alpha scowls slightly but nods his head before walking back to his desk. Instead of sitting in his chair on the opposite side, he leans back to sit on the desk itself, directly in front of me. “Does anyone know you're here?" "No," I say quickly. "A rampaging Vampire Lord isn't going to come storming through here to get you again will he?" he raises a brow at me. “What?” I scoff, “Afraid to get you ass kicked again?” “Hey, I did not get my ass kicked,” he protests. “Whatever lets you sleep at night,” I smirk and he smiles back. “There anything else I need to know?” Silas’ plan to steal the Alpha’s soul floats to the surface of my mind. I should tell him. I need to tell him, but the words never come. What if he kicks me out right now? Thinks that this is all part of the plan? Doesn’t believe me when I tell him I want nothing to do with it? “No,” I finally answer and look away from him and feel his green eyes burning into the side if my skull. “Do you need a place to stay?” “No,” my eyes continue to avoid the Alpha’s. A warm hand cups my face and turns my head to look at him. “I’m gunna ask you again, and you aren’t going to lie to me this time. Do you need a place a stay,” the intensity in those eyes is mesmerizing. “Yes,” I whisper. A thumb brush my bottom lip. Butterflies flutter in my stomach. “You can stay here,” he breathes. “I- No, I can’t. Not… not with Wilder-“ “I banished him,” Maddox interrupts me. “What?” I look at him wide eyed. “I know what he did. To you. I do not and will not tolerate that in my pack,” my cheeks heat up even more and pull my face away from his hand, embarrassed. I want the to floor open up and swallow me whole. “You can stay here. I will help you. You will have my protection,” his hand moves to my knee and squeezes. “No. I-“ “You’re staying. Did you pack a bag?” The Alpha is quick to derail my protests. “A bag? No,” I shrug. “You didn’t grab any clothes or anything before you left?” He asks confused. “No, I grabbed my weapons and I’m wearing my clothes,” I huff. “I mean a CHANGE of clothes,” he rolls his eyes. “Again, I’m wearing all my clothes,” he blinks at me. “This… this is all you have?” “The only other clothes I have are my costumes,” something that looks like anger flickers across his face, but it’s quickly replaced with a neutral expression. “I’ll get you clothes. And anything else you need,” Maddox states with finality. “Absolutely not,” I shove his hand off my knee. “I wasn’t asking permission,” the sly smile on his face and the sparkle in his eye pisses me off, but it also sends those damn butterflies fluttering in my stomach again. "Well I don't need s**t," a large finger hooks into one of the holes in my leggings and pulls. "Right, because this ragamuffin look is really flattering," he teases. "f**k off," I swat his hand away. "You need clothes that aren't falling apart, and more than a single pair of leggings and a shirt," I glower at him but concede, knowing I won't win this argument. "Whatever..." I sit back, crossing my arms. "I'll just have you to write down your size and we'll find some clothes for you," he hands me a a note pad and pen and I snatch it from him. My sizes, or at least my best guess at what my size is, is scribbled down and I hand it pack to him. "Good girl," he smiles and I have to fight back the shiver that wants to run down my spine. "Follow me," the Alpha stands abruptly and offers his hand. I ignore and stand on my own, earning an eye roll from the other man. We leave the office and back down the hall towards the bedrooms. As we pass Wilder's room there's loud bangs and crashing sounds from the other side. "Sorry. As you can imagine, he didn't take it very well when I banished him," Maddox apologizes and I quicken my pace be closer to the large male, putting him between me and the raging Gamma. We walk by large double doors, the wood beautifully carved and accented with brass inlay. "This is my room," he points at the ornate doors, "and you, will be staying here." Directly across from his room is another set of double doors, just as beautiful, though the carvings are different, more floral and feminine. Maddox pushes them open to reveal a massive master suite. The walls are painted a warm grey that reflects the sunlight entering through the large bay window across the room. I walk in to what seems to be a sitting area decorated with an arm chair and love seat. Bookshelves sit on either side of an archway that divides the space. Beyond the threshold is the sleeping area with the largest bed I have ever seen sitting to the right of the bay window. To the left is an ensuite bathroom and a walk in closet the size of my old room. "It's not quite as big as my room, but it is bigger than Asher and Wilder's room. I hope it's okay," Maddox says nervously. “This… this is too much,” I start to feel overwhelmed taking in the enormous room. “No one is using it. It’s yours for however long you need,” the smile he gives me is so warm and I feel my heart stutter and my cheeks heat up. “I have some work to finish up in my office. If you need anything you can come to me or Asher, the blonde who found you at gate, my Beta,” I nod wide eyed, still taking in the extravagance of my surroundings. The Alpha pats my shoulder before exiting the room. When the door closes behind him, everything hits me at once and fall to my knees with tears welling in my eyes. I finally left. I got out. Freedom is within reach. So why do I suddenly feel so alone and empty?
