Chapter 25

MADDOX "Okay, I think this is the last one," I release a long breath as I place the last person down on a medical bed. "Finally," Natalie sighs, "and one guy did all this?" "A Lord vampire, not just some guy, but yes," my ego is still recovering. "Alright, well, grab some gauze and saline. Go clean up the minor injuries, I'll tend to the more serious ones," the doctor instructs. I follow her directions and head into the pack house where the minimally wounded were resting. They were all piled into the sun room, the french doors left open to let a cross breeze through. I start with the worst looking cuts first and work my way around the room. When I get to Asher, I'm relieved to see there's only minor cuts, the worst injury being the nasty bruise on his neck. A smile forces it way onto my lips as I wipe away the purple blood from his face. At least he got in a good bite on that asshole. "Oh my Goddess!" Inaya is standing in the open doorway, shock and horror on her face, "What the hell happened?" "s**t, I forgot we had plans tonight. I'm sorry, I should have called," guilt swirls in my gut. "No, no, it's okay. Clearly you had a lot going on..." she trails off as she looks around the room. "Still, you came all the way here. If you don't mind waiting, I can still-" "Here, let me help," Inaya cuts me off and comes to kneel next to me in front of Asher. She takes the gauze from my hand and continues cleaning off my Beta. "You really don't need to do that," I insist. "I'm a psychiatrist," she smiles at me, "Wound care may not be my usual type of patient care, but I'm still a medical doctor." "How did I not know that about you?" my mouth is slightly agape from shock. "I don't like to tell people," she shrugs, "They get weirded out and think I'm always psychoanalyzing them." "Are you always psychoanalyzing people?" I ask playfully and she giggles. "I mean... It's hard not to when it's your job, but I don't make a conscious effort to do it," delicate hands poke and prob at the bruise decorating Asher's neck. “Does it bother you?” The question is whispered, almost hesitant, like she’s scared of the answer. “No,” my answer blurts out immediately without a second thought. Hazel eyes scan mine, no doubt reading them for signs of dishonesty. “I’m glad. I enjoy spending time with you,” that bright smile returns when she finds I’m being truthful, “So, is this everyone that’s been hurt?” “No, more serious injuries are in the med bay being treated by our pack doctor,” I explain. “Can I help there too?” A small smile pulls at my lips. She’s so sweet and kind. She would make the perfect mate, and yet… I don’t want that with her. Neither does my wolf. Both of us happy with simple friendship. “I’m sure Natalie would love the assist,” I take her hand in mine and lead her to the infirmary. “That better not be another patient needing medical attention,” Natalie rudely complains when she sees us walk through the door. “Oh, no! I’m a friend of your Alpha. I’m a doctor. I just wanted to see if you’d like some help?” Inaya quickly introduces herself. Natalie eyes her suspiciously before flicking her eyes to me. I nod my head. “Fine. If you really want to. You can go check on bed one,” she points her finger toward the bed she means. Inaya is quick to move, grabbing the patients' medical sheets on her way by. “Alright, looks like bed one is Wilder Bishop,” Anaya hums to herself. “My Gamma,” I inform her. She hesitates. “Are you okay if I treat him?” Her eyes peek up at me. “Of course,” encouraging her, I place a hand on the small of her back and nudge her forward. Her cheeks turn a faint red. “Oblique displaced fracture to the right femur… damage to the trachea from a knife wound… He can’t seem to catch a break, can he?” Inaya hums. I simply grunt in indifference, still pissed about the new information that was given to me. “Everything okay?” She raises a brow at me, confused by my attitude. The words are stuck in my throat. I still don’t want to believe what I was told, but everything starts clicking into place if it is true. “I was told he did something horrible… disgusting. I don’t want to believe it but... I think I witnessed him about to do it again,” when I look up to meet her gaze, she’s not looking at me, but at Wilder with furrowed brows. “I’m sorry,” it’s spoken just above a whisper. The clipboard with Wilder’s medical history is set aside and Inaya goes to work checking over the Gamma. She checks the freshly placed cast in his leg first, then the wound on his throat. The rest of his body is littered with minor cuts and bruises. As she’s updating his chart, the red head starts to stir, making garbled groans. “f**k,” he rasps, sounding like he’s been a smoker for three decades. “You shouldn’t try to speak yet,” the blonde woman tuts. ‘Who the hell is this?’ Wilder’s mind connects with mine. ‘This is my friend Inaya. She’s a doctor and is helping out Nat,’ I explain. “How are you feeling Wilder? Are you in any pain?” The Gamma nods his head yes. “Looks like you were given some oxycodone about three hours ago, we can give you some more in another one or two more, okay?” He nods again. ‘She’s hot,’ Wilder comments, ‘you hittin’ that?’ I roll my eyes at him, refusing to respond. ‘You totally are,’ the Gamma grins devilishly. ‘You’re insufferable,’ my annoyance starts to build. Thankfully, the red head goes quiet for a few minutes, allowing the doctor to examine him a bit more. ‘So did that bastard take the w***e with him?’ The insult towards Vixen has a growl escaping my chest, startling Inaya. “Sorry,” I apologize quickly before returning my heated gaze to Wilder. 'Watch your f*****g mouth,’ annoyance is quickly boiling over into anger. 'Why? It’s what she is. She whores herself out at that shitty ass club,’ he crosses his arms over his chest. ‘Is that where you raped her?’ Brown eyes glare back at me, challenging me. I growl a warning and he quickly backs down. ‘I didn’t f*****g… s**t, man, I can’t believe you would actually believe that b***h over me,’ I want to believe him. I want to so badly. ‘What did I walk in on when you had her pinned in your room?’ His scowl deepens. ‘I already told you, I was-‘ ‘Putting her in her place? Yeah, you said that. HOW did you plan on doing that?’ My arms tremble with anger, my wolf itching to take control. ‘I was gunna rough her up a bit,’ he shrugs, averting his gaze. ‘She needed to be stripped naked for that?’ The gamma groans at my persistent questioning. ‘I mean, no? But I thought maybe embarrassing her would drive the message home?’ It’s spoken more like a question. I narrow my eyes at him, becoming too irate to continue this discussion calmly, and walk away. “Well, it was nice meeting you Wilder,” Inaya quickly follows me to the other side of the infirmary, as far away from my Gamma as possible. I rub my hands on my face in frustration. “You were talking through mindlink weren’t you?” The brunette asks. “Yeah, we were…” I confirm with a sigh. “Was it… an important conversation?” She asks hesitantly. “Yes… why do you ask?” She worries her lip, contemplating how to answer. “Whatever you were talking about, he was lying. His body language was screaming liar.”
