CHAPTER : 7

After the conversation that Zeenia had with her friend, it gave her a lot to think about. She then showered and climbed into bed. She was but all night haunted by dreams of a handsome man, with blue eyes watching over her, which troubled her and woke her up from sleep. She then lay awake and had a sleepless night.   She then slept for some time, but suddenly woke up feeling as if something was wrong. She checked out for her mobile while getting up. She then realized that she had slept soundly in the morning. Too sound she slept, and would now be late. She had also forgotten to retrieve her email, to check for her assignments. She searched for something to wear amongst the pile of unwashed clothes but found nothing there. She then rushed to Tina's room, to search for something from her closet. Tina had plenty of shirts and jeans, but they were all black. But Zeenia thought that would not matter for now. She thought she needed something quick to take her through the evening. Zeenia realized how much she missed her mother at that particular moment. But she thought it was no going back now, and she had become a woman and should learn to take responsibility. She had overslept and had not realized how tired she had been. She knew that she was working as well as simultaneously studying, which had exhausted her body.  Her duty timings also were 4 pm to 11 pm. She knew she could not be late for her duties, as she had wanted this summer internship so much. She knew they would be paying her fairly, more than she had expected. Her stipend would cover her portion of the rent, car service, and even food. She would possibly also be able to save, some money for further studies.   Zeenia's father also had been putting money in her account, because he did not want her to go hungry, which made him even more endearing, she thought. Zeenia put a waffle into the toaster and found that Tina had made coffee for her, but had not woken her while leaving. She had the waffle and drank the coffee. Later she had some lunch and then dressed up. She gave a call for the Uber cab while thinking that very soon she would stop using a cab, and travel by train so as to save more. She locked her flat and left when her Uber had arrived. While traveling she kept on thinking that "Who gives such a schedule to a young woman just out of a high school." She was assigned her training under a woman. She was sure that her boss hated her and thus gave her odd working hours. Zeenia wished for her boss to look differently at her, instead of that hatred in his beautiful blue eyes. The thought of Adv. Theodore brought a flood of warmth that coursed through Zeenia's body. She was surprised at herself because she should have felt cold with hatred for him, but she did not. Since having seen Theodore, her thoughts were about s*x. She thought it was all probably because of her hormones. But it was more than that. The attraction was very significant, more than she understood.  As the car stopped and started in the traffic, Zeenia closed her eyes thinking about him. His blue eyes, covered with soft dark, and long lashes, she felt she would die to have such lashes. Everything about him was beautiful. His eyes, his lashes, his perfect square jawline. He was so lean but muscular, and his walk, it was as if he walked on air. Her daydream ended when the car stopped outside the Jackson headquarters. Zeenia paid the driver. He gave her his card saying if she needed to get back home, she could call him up. He also offered to give her cheaper rates. Zeenia nodded and kept the card in her purse.  She rushed inside and went to her assigned desk. There was an assignment sheet on the desk. She logged into the computer, and proceeded to enter the information, while simultaneously backing up the information on a drive, as per the instructions.    Suddenly without turning behind, Zeenia realized that someone was standing behind her. She knew that it was surely Theodore. She then spun her chair. She wondered why she had not heard him coming through the door. Because the door squeaked every time, someone entered. Maybe he had another way of entering the room, she thought. She looked up and met his gaze. He was more handsome close up than could be imagined.  But then very rudely Theodore said that he wanted her to stay away from him. Tears welled up in Zeenia's eyes but she did not want him to see the tears. He then asked her to log in the information, from the paper he had dropped at her desk. "Don't try to understand this, because you will not be able to" he instructed. She turned towards the computer, and then in a forceful tone replied back, "If you hired me, and I had to go through extensive training, then you should know, that I do understand what these means." Zeenia was happy now that she had spoken up.  Just before leaving, he said that he had forgotten, about that. He also informed her that she would work under someone senior, from tomorrow.  Zeenia replied that "You need someone who you can insult, abuse, be rude, pass insensitive remarks, without her retaliating back. You mean you need someone submissive." Zeenia had learned from her father to stand up for herself, even with those in authority. She then began working on her assignment. She heard him walk on the tiled floor, and then the sound stopped. She thought he must have left. But she heard him again saying, "You will receive your assignment tonight in your email." He then turned towards her, and offered an apology, for his conduct. He had terrified Zeenia, but she did not want him to know that. She just mumbled 'whatever.' Zeenia at that moment did not care. He was a heartless person, she thought. She did not want anything to do with him. She then blew out a hard breath and got back to work. But she could not shake off the feeling that he had torn off her heart. She had liked that he was imposing and all business, but that would have been fine if she did not feel something profound for him. Something mind-blowing.  Zeenia had found other girls at the office, gaze at him, as if there were no other men alive, and they were ready to do anything, to gain his attention. Theodore, on the other hand, had for some reason focused his attention on her. The type of attention that occurs when a person is seeking to bend someone to his will. But he would never be able to do that to her, she promised herself. She knew that she would have to quit if it continued, But she did not want to do that. She needed the job. She smiled thinking about the next day because she would not be reporting to him. Her time passed quickly after that.  After finishing her work, Zeenia prepared to leave. She turned around to go to the locker to get her purse, and he was standing there, so close. She would have bumped into him, had she not been cautious. She asked Theodore, "How do you do that?" He questioned back, "How do I do what?" She asked, "Walk without your footsteps being heard." He replied, "That must be because you must have been preoccupied somewhere else." He then offered her to have food with him. Zeenia was surprised, at his blow hot, blow cold attitude. She replied "No thanks. I have to get home. It is very late." Theodore asked her whether he could drive her home? But then changed that to, "I mean my driver could drive you home." Zeenia replied that she had someone to drive her home. "You mean a boyfriend," he asked? She asked him "Why do you assume I have a boyfriend?" She said that because deep down she did not want him to feel that way. She wanted him to think she was available. Zeenia's feelings were conflicted. She realized that she despised him, but loved him at the same time. Theodore replied that "Because of a young woman like you...." He stopped mid-sentence. His face and voice had become more professional than. He then left the room. She too left for home.
