CHAPTER : 9

Zeenia did not want to call him Theodore. She did not want to call him anything but mine. If she called him by his first name it would suggest that she was on his level, which apparently she was not. Also, his reactions kept on changing every moment. Zeenia decided that she did not require that confusion in her life. When in a discussion and while asking him a question, she avoided using his name. But it was not easy, and she started making mistakes. When on his insistence, she didn't call him Theodore, and she purposely avoided, he understood that. He stood up straight, and a cold look crossed his face and settled in his eyes. His steely gaze enclosed Zeenia from the head down to her foot.  There was no more warmth about him now. He said "When you complete your assignment, I want you to close up the office, and then you can go home. I have a date."He turned quickly on his heels, like a dancer, smooth, effortlessly, and silent. He went to his office, and when she glanced at his office, one of his female staff was present, who was over-friendly with him and was very jealous of Zeenia. She looked at Zeenia as if she could put a knife, in her back. Zeenia was not able to hear what they were saying, but she saw her laughing and glancing in Zeenia's direction. Theodore then placed his arm around her back, and then led her out with him. It became difficult for Zeenia to work the entire night after that. She made mistakes but caught them before the damage was done. Zeenia knew that she had missed her chances with Theodore. He had found someone who was willing, able, and worldlier than Zeenia and knew her way around men. Though Zeenia could have easily kissed him goodbye. But she did not want to give in that easy. She followed the theory that 'Man who are hard to get, are easy to keep' and she wanted to keep him. At 12 in the night, she had completed her assignments and locked up her cabin. She glanced around and saw a young man standing at the door. He was an intern and was working, the night shift. Zeenia opened the office door, and he was standing, looking down at her. The young man introduced himself, that his name was Daniel. He asked her whether she would like to go to the office cafeteria for meals? He said that they served meals all night. McDonald's of course he said. He extended his hand to shake, Zeenia's. She thought there was no reason to not accept. She knew her Uber driver worked the night shift and would arrive when she called him up. Zeenia gave him a smile, as she was relieved that someone knew that she was up here alone. She said "Yes" it would be great. She would love something to eat. She said that she had been surviving on coffee and muffin for so long. She closed the door behind her and left along with Daniel. He was a tall, thin man in his late twenties who looked as if he could be her brother. The cafeteria was on the first floor, they climbed up the stairs, and sat at one of the many unoccupied tables. Zeenia got for herself, some biscuits, sausage, and an egg sandwich with black coffee, while he got a croissant and egg and coffee.  As soon as Zeenia took one bite, she felt a presence, and when she glanced up standing over their table was Theodore, dressed in a dark suit and black shirt, with no tie. He looked more handsome than before. His black suit and black shirt accentuated his pale skin even more. When she met his eyes, she saw his brows furrowed, and he was looking pissed. Zeenia wondered what had she done that he was angry now? He had told her to lock up and go, and she had thought that he would not be back. He asked "Adv. Daniel, don't you have any work left? Daniel glanced up as surprised as she had been on seeing Theodore.  Zeenia wondered as to how Theodore could move around and show up without anyone hearing him or seeing him? He had made a habit she thought, of appearing and disappearing like a magician. Daniel stood up and lowered his eyes and said "Yes Sir. But......" 'But nothing' Theodore said in a heavy voice. You are leaving work and are entertaining Zeenia. She has to go home and get some sleep. Daniel looked at Zeenia with an apologetic look, and then dashed down the stairs without uttering another word. Zeenia glared up at Theodore. It was hard to see him as overbearing and dominant, over that handsome exterior. But nevertheless, she had herself seen how he had been cruel to the staff and to her. But right now, her heart no more skipped a beat because of his presence. She thought, he had no right to speak like that to Daniel. Theodore asked her "What do you have to say for yourself?" She replied "I don't have to say anything. If you want to fire me for completing my work, and then eating. Go ahead and do that. But for now, I need to eat." She then took a bite of food and looked down into her plate. She then had a sip of her coffee, which had turned cold. She then met his stare once more.  Zeenia then burst out in anger and said "You don't care if I starve as long as your job is being done. I don't even get a break. You could have assigned to me another mentor, but you didn't, because you don't want anyone to know how abusive you are. And you didn't have to embarrass Daniel like that in front of me." Zeenia was satisfied that her words had cut through Theodore, and she was pleased with herself for once. But the look in his eyes was disapproving, which was an added plus for Zeenia. Theodore then in an emotionless voice, told her that "I am taking you home." She replied "No you will not. I can find my way home alone. I have been traveling daily at this ungodly hour. Tomorrow is my day off, and I am going to lie in bed, and forget that I want to quit." "I will not take no for an answer. You are coming with me. It is my responsibility to see you safely home. A young woman is not safe traveling alone at this time of the night, and from now on as you work for me, I shall provide transportation to you, too, and from work." Zeenia stood up and started walking away, and Theodore walked alongside her. He asked her "Would it help if I apologized for my actions?" He then said that "The exit is down this hall. I will show you the way."  Zeenia kept on walking for a few minutes and was still not getting to the front entrance, where it was lit, and there was a front desk. Theodore touched her arms to lead her away, and she shivered not from his cold hands because she could not understand if it was because of constant chill in the office premises or because of him. But his touch had an awakening presence in her body. She was aroused. Her breathing was erratic. She felt lightheaded and was thankful that he opened the door and fresh air rushed in across her face.  Zeenia looked around and then at him. She then understood that this was the back entrance of the building. She stood not saying a word as he walked to the limo and opened the door. Theodore asked her to come in. When she did not budge, he asked her "What are you afraid of? Don't tell me you are afraid of me. Not with your attitude."  Zeenia took this as a challenge, as she wanted to prove him wrong. She was not afraid of going in the car with him, she was afraid of him. Afraid that she could fall in love if she was not already in love. She thought this was all against what Tina had thought her. She had said that "Don't fall in love with a man you want. Act as if you don't want him and then when he doesn't understand why you wouldn't want him, then dump him. "You will break him down, and then he is yours. That is if he doesn't do the same thing to you first."             Zeenia remembered that Tina had also thought her that "Men never know what they want. First, they want a submissive woman, and then they get angry when she does everything for them, and then they want a strong independent woman, and then she is too independent. You could go crazy, trying to please them. Zeenia thought that Tina was more knowledgeable than her, because she had been moving from one house to another, and she had also come into contact with different people. Zeenia herself on the other hand had been a sheltered child, who was thought to be unique. She then thought that if her father and mother would see her now, they would definitely think her to be stupid, for having taken up a challenge, from this insanely handsome man. He had dared her to climb into his limo at 2 am in the night, and she had accepted that dare. She had not realized how tired she was the minute she sat back on the leather seats in his limo and glanced at Theodore, she went into a deep slumber. She woke up in a strange room in a strange bed.
