The iron lock on the cage doors rattled loudly which meant Maya's escape was over. The air inside the mesh enclosure felt really thin. The silver things embedded in the canvas were humming under her boots, which made the weird feeling between her and Jaxon a little less strong. Her body was still screaming.
Jaxon was standing twenty feet away looking like a wall of muscle. The neon lights were shining off the sweat on his shoulders. He was not pacing around like most fighters do. He was just waiting, staring at her mask with a lot of focus.
"No escape tonight, sweetheart, " Jaxon said in a voice that everyone could hear. He raised his hands, which were taped up and got into a fighting stance. "Let's see what's behind that mask."
Maya did not say anything. She was afraid her voice would c***k. Instead she jumped up and down on her toes. Got into a fighting stance. She had to fight him as Raven, the tough person she was trying to be, not the timid girl he knew from school.
The referee blew the whistle and Jaxon moved fast. He did not start with punches; he swung his big arm at her. Maya ducked under his arm and his fist went over her head. She spun around. Kicked him hard in the leg.
Her boot hit him with a thud but Jaxon barely flinched. He grabbed her ankle. Maya was ready. She pulled her leg back. Kicked him again this time in the face.
Jaxon caught her heel in his hand an inch from his face. The kick was strong. He did not let go. He. Said, "I love that kick."
Then he pulled her forward. Maya fell hard on the canvas. The silver mesh under the mat hurt her body. Before she could get up Jaxon pinned her down. He sat on her waist holding her wrists above her head.
The crowd was going wild banging on the silver cage. Maya tried to throw Jaxon off. He was too heavy. They were breathing hard and Maya could smell him. Pine and mint. It was overwhelming.
"I've been looking for you for a week, " Jaxon said, leaning down close to her mask. His eyes were wide. He looked really intense. "I feel that weird feeling from the alley. You feel it too don't you? You know what we are."
Maya looked at him through her mask, her heart beating fast. She could not let him take off her mask. She could not let him see her face. "I feel... Nothing " she lied.
Jaxon's jaw. He tightened his grip on her wrists. "Liar, " he said. He tried to take off her mask. Maya used all her strength to stop him. She arched her back. Pushed him off then used a self-defense move to hurt his throat.
Jaxon. Maya took advantage of the moment. She wrapped her legs around his neck. Threw him off her. She got up gasping for air and Jaxon was already getting up looking at her with shock and admiration.
Suddenly a loud alarm went off. The lights turned red. The crowd panicked, running towards the exit doors. "Enforcers!" someone shouted. "The High Council Enforcers are raiding the district!"
Maya's blood ran cold. She had to get out of there fast. She ran towards the door, which Marcus had unlocked. Jaxon shouted her name. The crowd was too big and he could not catch up.
Maya ran into the alleys, the rain pounding on her face. She was tired and hurt. She had to keep going. She turned into an alley intending to hide but someone was standing there blocking her way.
It was Austin holding a black umbrella. He was. His eyes were cold and scary. "Well well " he said. "I was looking for something. I found something much better. A little bird playing in the dark."
He took a step forward. Maya felt a heavy weight on her shoulders. "Lets see what's, under the mask shall we?" he said, his voice echoing off the walls.
